Director, Construction & Facilities - Modesto, CA

The Director of Construction leads the Construction Project Manager team and is responsible for oversight of multiple new stores and remodel projects. This position requires an experienced individual with a high level of professionalism, strong construction project management competencies, excellent communication skills, strong knowledge and skill in grocery store and / or retail design, construction and operations. Extensive experience in new store construction and remodel processes is required. Additionally, this individual will be involved in existing physical plant programs including facility repairs and maintenance.

Responsibilities :

  • Partner with regional construction team and contribute to the improvement of construction processes to grow and develop the Save Mart Construction program to the highest standards
  • Coordinate new store development and remodels with internal stakeholders; establish positive relationships and ongoing communication with Store Managers, and Product and Merchandising teams
  • Adhere to all regional and / or national construction and operational standards and objectives
  • Manage multiple new and / or remodel store construction projects simultaneously
  • Direct all phases of construction project management including due diligence, schedule and budget development, planning and design, FF&E procurement and store move coordination; adhere to approved project budgets and schedules
  • Be the Save Mart liaison for all departments and outside contractors / equipment suppliers / consultants / landlords / governing authorities; Coordinate towards common goals while making critical decisions in a professional manner
  • Ensure the completion of all punch list items and follow-up warranty items; conduct 11-month warranty inspection with store manager
  • Coordinate follow-up work with appropriate General Contractor
  • Coordinate communication between district and store leadership, contractors, vendors and construction community
  • Work with store leadership on proactive customer communication regarding planned store remodels
  • Help manage the regional equipment buyer and equipment buying process; Ensure the timely purchase of all store fixtures and equipment as designated by Store Operations and coordinate all deliveries and installations
  • Perform on-site inspections of new store sites and buildings to ensure usability and compliance with lease and construction exhibits; ensure quality workmanship per Save Mart plans / specifications
  • Supervise and perform all aspects of construction administration including managing contracts, change orders, project schedules purchase order management, invoicing and project closeout documentation
  • Maintain excellent records and documentation of costs
  • Act as support and point person for stores in construction process and promote safety for all Associates at construction sites
  • Serves in an advisory role in matters of : site evaluation, general contractor selection, budget creation
  • Makes independent decisions in matters of : change-order approvals, field directives
  • Assists in training and checking work of less experienced team members
  • Manage a team of Save Mart field techs as well as Third Party contractors to the Save Mart Repair & Maintenance (R&M) program to the highest standards
  • Coordinate service vendors for small renovations, repairs and maintenance work
  • Direct all phases Repair and Maintenance and store move coordination; adhere to approved budgets and schedules
  • Implement and coordinate all Workflows and Communication through Save Mart Work Order Management System (currently Corrigo)
  • Coordinate communication between district and store leadership, contractors, vendors and construction community
  • Work with store leadership on proactive customer communication regarding planned store R&M work

  • Supervise and perform all aspects of facility repairs and maintenance including managing contracts, work orders, schedules purchase order management, approvals and work order closeout documentation

Hiring pay range : $154,229.00 - 160,000.00

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Excellent knowledge of Grocery Refrigeration, Lighting, Plumbing, Electric and HVAC Systems
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Regulatory Issues : CARB, Title 24 Energy, ADA, and OSHA
  • Experience preparing construction budgets and tracking to actual costs
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite applications as well as work order and project management systems such as Microsoft Project, ProCore, Corrigo, Blue Beam, etc.
  • Familiar with store fixtures, planning, operations and merchandising
  • Proficient in computer estimating, scheduling, data base applications
  • Basic understanding of food store operations
  • Ability to effectively organize and handle multiple projects under pressure at one time
  • Exceptional human relationship skills; Exhibit tact in handling challenging situations
  • Ability to work with design consultants to facilitate development and construction drawings in an effective and timely manner
  • Excellent knowledge of grocery equipment and fixtures
  • Excellent knowledge of leasing and negotiating construction exhibits
  • Experience : 10 years related, 5 years in grocery construction leadership experience including new store and remodels, 7 years supervisory, management and / or leadership experience

    Education : 4 year / Bachelors Degree and / or equivalent experience / training in Architectural / Engineering, Construction Management or construction-related fields preferred

    Other Requirements :

    50% travel throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley including willingness to travel throughout region with flexibility to work different hours-including early morning and late-night work

    In a typical workday, 50% of time will be spent sitting, 25% of time will be spent standing and 25% of time will be spent walking.

    Position requires ability to lift laptop and materials up to 15 pounds no more than 1 / 3 of the time in a typical workday using deep knee and carrying lift position

    Work location is indoors and involves exposure to work in a confined space.

    The noise level in the work is typically moderate.
