Job description

Highway Maintenance Worker

The Washington State Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill multiple non-permanent Highway Maintenance Worker positions for winter maintenance season in Connell, Pasco, and Prosser. We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are mechanically inclined and enjoy working outdoors. The successful candidates will perform a variety of skilled tasks including operating snow removal equipment, repairing roadways, maintaining culverts and catch basins, removing debris, and providing traffic control for these operations. WSDOT maintenance personnel are expected to respond quickly to clear highways of hazards to ensure the public has safe and seamless access to travel. This position may also work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water, traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. A typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends, nights, and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker will :

  • Proficiently operate a variety of heavy equipment to perform snow and ice control, including applying anti-icing compounds, removing snow and ice from road surfaces, loading and hauling materials, and maintaining stockpile sites.
  • Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair, including applying asphalt, concrete, and other synthetic materials.
  • Maintain and repair roadside infrastructure such as drainage systems, guardrails, fences, impact attenuators, signs, and landscaped areas.
  • Conduct vegetation management, including danger tree removal, pesticide application, and site remediation.
  • Respond to emergencies by establishing traffic control in compliance with MUTCD standards, acting as first responder at accident scenes, spills, and natural events, and coordinating with external agencies.
  • Perform traffic control operations, including lane closures, detours, and flagging, to ensure safety during maintenance and emergency response activities.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs, including servicing hand tools, chainsaws, vehicles, and heavy equipment.
  • Assist with cleanup activities such as graffiti removal, litter pickup, debris removal, and the safe cleanup of unlawful dwellings, including hazardous substances and biohazards.

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required :

  • Commercial Vehicle Operation : Experience gained through possession and use of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with N endorsement, without air brake restrictions, and a current medical card.
  • Highway Maintenance : Skilled in performing roadway maintenance, construction, excavation, farming, or heavy equipment operation. Ability to perform asphalt and concrete pavement repair, drainage and erosion control, roadside infrastructure repair, and vegetation management.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance : Skilled in operating, inspecting, and maintaining a variety of Class A, B, or C maintenance equipment, hand tools, and power equipment. Ability to operate heavy equipment to perform snow and ice control operations.
  • Traffic Control and Emergency Response : Ability to plan, set, and maintain traffic control in compliance with MUTCD standards, including lane closures, detours, and flagging (A valid Traffic Control / Flagging card required within 6 months). Ability to respond to accidents, spills, and other emergency events, and coordinate with external agencies as required.
  • Safety and Service : Ability to contribute to and uphold a respectful, safe, and inclusive work environment that values diversity and equal opportunity, and to provide excellent customer service when interacting with the traveling public.
  • In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required :

  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts / stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to respond to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.
  • It is preferred that qualified candidates also have :

  • A high school diploma, GED certificate, or equivalent.
  • These are non-permanent positions with an expected duration of 3-6 months through the winter maintenance season. This recruitment will be used to fill positions in multiple areas throughout the South Central Region which includes Connell, Pasco, and Prosser and surrounding areas.

    These positions are not eligible for remote work. These positions may be filled at either the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) level depending on qualifications. The hourly wages for each level are :

  • Highway Maintenance Worker 1 ($24.83 $30.29 Hourly)
  • Highway Maintenance Worker 2 ($27.42 $33.40 Hourly)
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
