Director, Individual Giving (Pipeline Development)

Museum of Science, Boston

www.mos.org

Innovation and creativity come from the unique perspectives of a diverse staff. We value your perspective.

As science and technology increasingly shape our lives, the Museum of Science strives to equip and inspire everyone to use science for the global good while keeping up with the pace of change. Among the world's largest science centers and New England's most attended cultural institution, we engage nearly five million people a year – at Science Park and in museums around the world, in classrooms, and online. The Museum's singular location connecting Boston and Cambridge puts us at the junction of some of the world's most influential academic institutions and industries, local and state government, schools, and the public. Trusted by each sector, we are ideally positioned to convene, inspire, and create meaningful experiences for all. Come join us on our mission to inspire a lifelong love of science in everyone and living our vision for a world where science belongs to each of us.

To grow the Museum's Individual Giving program, we need a leader who can both manage a high-performing team and design donor programs that strategically cultivate and steward relationships. You will build a best-in-class major gifts program that equips frontline fundraisers with insights, strategies, and tools to engage donors meaningfully. Your leadership will ensure thoughtful donor journeys across all levels of giving, maximizing philanthropic potential and sustaining long-term engagement.

What You'll Accomplish

  • Lead and manage a team of fundraisers : Provide coaching, guidance, and performance management to ensure the team delivers high-impact support for individual giving.
  • Establish and execute a robust pipeline development strategy : Build and oversee systems to identify, qualify, and prioritize high-potential prospects for major and leadership giving.
  • Design and manage pipeline-building programs : Lead community giving campaigns, giving societies, and other donor engagement initiatives, ensuring they integrate seamlessly into the major gifts pipeline.
  • Build and execute thoughtful donor journeys : Develop structured, strategic engagement and stewardship plans that guide donors from initial interest to meaningful, long-term giving relationships.
  • Optimize portfolio management and advance prospect pipeline health : Partner with gift officers to ensure portfolios are balanced, strategic, and aligned with organizational goals. Monitor movement through the donor cycle, and execute strategies to deepen engagement, accelerate giving, and enhance donor experiences.
  • Leverage data and technology : Develop tools, reports, and systems to inform strategy, track KPIs, and provide actionable insights for fundraising success.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration : Partner with colleagues in stewardship, events, and major gifts to translate insights into action and ensure cohesive, thoughtful donor journeys.

What We're Looking For (Competencies)

  • Pipeline builder & program architect : Demonstrated success creating, scaling, and managing fundraising programs, with experience growing annual, mid-level, and major giving.
  • Strategic communicator & steward : Skilled at designing donor journeys, messaging, and engagement strategies that cultivate lasting relationships.
  • Data-informed decision maker : Proficient in using CRMs and donor analytics to drive strategy, track KPIs, and evaluate program performance.
  • Cross-functional leader : Experienced in managing teams and collaborating effectively across functions to ensure smooth donor experiences and handoffs.
  • Leadership & management : Proven ability to coach, mentor, and inspire staff, set clear goals, and drive team performance toward organizational objectives.
  • Creative & strategic thinker : Brings innovative ideas and solutions to donor engagement and cultivation challenges.
  • Mission-driven relationship builder : Passionate about advancing the organization's mission through authentic, lasting donor relationships.
  • Required Qualifications

  • 8–10+ years of experience in individual giving, annual giving, or donor engagement, with demonstrated results in team leadership, pipeline development, and donor retention.
  • How We Work - Our Values

  • Everyone : We are everyone's museum. We pursue equity and celebrate every person for who they are. We foster an inclusive environment in which we value and respect diversity.
  • Service : We serve our colleagues and community. We hold ourselves accountable to be a trustworthy public resource, and to support a sustainable, just and evidence-based future.
  • Learning : We love learning. We are curious about the world and want to share our joy and wonder with others. We value open minds and recognize that everyone has more to explore, discover and create.
  • Connection : We find strength in connections. We collaborate across communities, organizations and disciplines to make science relevant and accessible to all.
  • Boldness : We dream big. We boldly push ourselves forward, pursuing new ideas and challenges. We experiment and learn from our failures as we seek to inspire purpose, spark imagination and encourage hope.
  • Salary Range : $112,000—$140,000 USD
