Description :

Administers nursing care within the scope of practice under the direction of a registered nurse, licensed physician, dentist, podiatrist, optometrist, or chiropractor.

Administers oxygen, applies sterile dressings, inserts catheters, reinserts gastrostomy tubes, suctions, and irrigates wounds.

Gives enemas and douches.

Collects specimens and performs dialysis treatments using hemodialysis equipment.

Monitors patients during procedures.

Assists physicians with physical exams, treatments, and laboratory tests.

Assists in emergencies by administering first aid, performing CPR, or restraining patients.

Administers controlled drugs such as narcotics and tranquilizers and non-controlled medication in oral, rectal, topical, or injectable form, and provides medication instructions to patients.

Maintains medication accountability records, charts patient records, prepares and counts medication, and maintains medication stock and medical equipment and supplies.

Observes, documents, and reports patient conditions, medication reactions, treatment responses, patient behavior, and progress.

Prepares and maintains related reports and records including unusual incident reports, patient records, medication reports, seclusion / restraint logs, patient kardex, and team plan.

Provides general nursing, direct care, and programming assistance.

Takes patient vital signs and assists with personal grooming and hygiene, bathing, or daily living activities.

Administers topical ointments and solutions, eye, ear, and nose drops.

Repositions patients and responds to patient alarms.

Makes medical appointments for patients and escorts them.

Assists with recreational activities and provides one-on-one group activities according to the intervention stated on the treatment plan.

Provides assistance by offering work direction, orientation, and training to lower-level direct care staff in providing general unskilled nursing care to patients.

Attends and participates in various meetings including staff conferences, committees, interdisciplinary team meetings, in-service training programs, and nursing meetings.

Orders medication and medical supplies, cleans the nurse's station and medication room / cart.

Performs clerical tasks such as answering the phone and filing.

Major worker characteristics include knowledge of skilled licensed practical nursing procedures, pharmacology, client / patient care, first aid, CPR, general hospital practices and procedures, HIPAA regulations and standards, human relations, inventory control, and employee training and development.

Skills include the use of medical equipment such as respirators, dialysis machines, sterilizers, oxygen equipment, and blood pressure cuffs as well as hypodermics and operation of personal computers.

Ability to understand the practical field of study and deal with some abstract but mostly concrete variables.

Recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate emergency action.

Develop good rapport with patients and residents.

Understand manuals and verbal instructions associated with practical nursing.

Demonstrate dexterity to administer injections and perform medical treatments and have the strength to move, reposition, or restrain patients.
