Full-Time Groundskeeper

A full-time groundskeeper is sought for multiple properties; three adjoined properties in East Setauket (28-acre primary estate with two private houses, several garages and 3 sheds), one property on Fire Island, and rooftop / terrace spaces for one apartment in Manhattan. The successful candidate will be required to travel between the three properties, as needed. The schedule will be 40+ hours, worked over 5-6 days per week. Flexibility is required to accommodate occasional weekends, holidays, and seasonal demands.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and maintain outdoor areas across all four properties to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and aesthetics.
• Manage a large organic vegetable garden : planting, watering, harvesting, and seasonal upkeep.
• Manage grassy areas, a pond, large number of trees, and various existing and new gardens, rock walls, walkways, driveways and patios.
• Care for a new orchard (future), ensuring proper pruning, fertilizing, and long-term health of the fruit trees.
• Purchase, daily care and monitoring of chickens, including feeding, cleaning, and ensuring safety of their environment.
• Maintain a walking bridge, beach area, beach chairs and water craft.
• Inspect all outdoor spaces regularly to ensure they are well-maintained and guest-ready.
• Coordinate and supervise various landscape contractors and arborists and interface with the landscape architect to ensure all projects meet expected standards. At times, this will require mowing, shoveling, blowing, raking and / or trimming by groundskeeper as needed.
• Maintain and tidy outdoor furniture, walkways, terraces, and other exterior areas (e.g., power washing, seasonal set-up and covering of furniture).
• Identify and work with a landscaper to beautify the grounds at the Fire Island home. Ensure Fire Island property is maintained and prepared for seasonal use, including cleaning and maintenance of outdoor furniture and setups for the season. Care and maintenance of bicycles and wagons there.
• For the rooftop / terrace spaces for the Manhattan apartment, interface with landscaper and landscape designer; seasonal set up. Other outside duties as needed.
• Provide light maintenance and repair support, such as fixing irrigation issues, replacing outdoor light bulbs, or tightening fixtures. For Setauket homes, switch doors and windows to screens seasonally.
• Maintain sheds in good order.
• Assist with special projects or outdoor event setups as needed. Other duties as needed eg. occasional dog walking.
• Maintain 2 Kubotas, keep gas on hand, maintain outdoor tools and equipment in good working order.
