Overview

The Lead Diagnostic / Xray Technologist position performs diagnostic radiographic procedures while providing leadership to staff. In addition to providing basic patient care, processing films,

maintaining equipment, and transporting patients, this position serves as a procedure specialist and leads a team of technologists in Diagnostic / X-ray.

The Multi-Modality Radiology Technologist performs imaging procedures and holds national registry in a minimum of 2 modalities shown below. This position provides basic patient care, maintains

equipment, transports patients, and prepares and maintains documentation.

X-ray and MRI,

This position's work location is on-site only.

Responsibilities

Leadership :

  • Provide team leadership to staff in the department.
  • Act at a resource and first point of escalation resource to address the needs of staff, patients and families.
  • Serve as a procedure specialist and subject matter expert on modality and its process and procedures.
  • Acts as the day-to-day lead for operations of the department and assures efficient operation of workflow of the department.
  • Responsible for maintaining the work schedule, workflow and staff schedules for the department.
  • Participates in the hiring process, performance evaluation and handling of issues, and in problem solving for the team.

Patient Care :

  • Obtains patient history.
  • Educates patients / families regarding procedures and / or treatment to be performed as well as risk factors and prevention.
  • Positions patients appropriately for the applicable radiographic procedure.
  • Performs radiographic procedures and analysis according to departmental guidelines.
  • Develops and evaluates radiographic results for technical quality, such as density, contrast, definition and distortion.
  • Applies learned methodologies with independent judgment according to established policies and procedures.
  • Performs prescribed procedures in accordance with established policies.
  • Maintains infection prevention standards.
  • Explains standard procedures and answers patients questions.
  • Prepares, cleans, adjusts, inspects and maintains equipment.
  • Produces quality images and prepares / presents them with other pertinent patient information for timely interpretation.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate documentation, archiving imaging data as needed or required.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other medical professionals.
  • Modality Specific

    Diagnostic :

  • Performs radiographic procedures using both stationary and mobile radiographic equipment.
  • Responsible for appropriate set up of the x-ray room and manipulation of equipment, and proper placement of patient for procedure.
  • Ensure proper image capture of skeletal structure requested for diagnosis and treatment purposes.
  • Process and develops exposed x-ray film and creates x-ray CD copies for review and interpretation.
  • Perform and process x-rays and submit / transmit them for interpretation.
  • Unload portable x-ray equipment and take to patient’s bedside to perform exams ordered by the physician. Must obtain clinically diagnostic, technically competent x-rays.
  • Conduct quarterly image reviews on fifteen (15) or more images as needed to ensure the highest quality exams are being performed. Graded feedback is provided to the technologists with ideas for improvement.
  • Cross training of technical staff in all applicable modalities.
  • MRI :

  • Operates a magnetic resonance scanner to obtain images used for diagnosis and treatment of patient pathologies.
  • Uses knowledge of imaging techniques and cross-sectional anatomy to create high quality scans.
  • Modifies technical settings and adjusts scanning parameters to enhance images and minimize unnecessary exposure.
  • Start IVs and / or catheters effectively and consistently for the MRI process.
  • Prepare, administer and monitor IV contrast and / or patient sedation and patient status.
  • Ensure completion of screenings for pacemakers and other patient status affecting qualification for MRI.
  • Quality :

  • Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs and evaluates equipment quality control measurements, demonstrating ability to troubleshoot and notifying appropriate personnel to maintain equipment performance.
  • Assures the efficient operation of workflow of the department and monitors and maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and materials to ensure non-interruption of service.
  • Oversees Radiology Quality Assurance including, PACs administration, collecting radiation data from rooms, and portables monthly; critiquing images for quality; performing monthly repeat analysis; maintaining C-arm cleaning logs; ensures accessories are maintained and available; inspects and marks lead aprons at NAH and off-site clinics and schedules preventative maintenance and repairs.
  • Leads Joint Commission and regulatory preparedness actions
  • Makes medical record and billing corrections as needed.
  • Participates in required training for compliance related activities (HIPAA, Compliance, Patient Safety, Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies.
  • Participates and contributes to quality improvement processes and unit meetings / activities.
  • Ensures the examination results meet the facility standard for Quality Assurance before findings are released for interpretation.
  • Provides oversight for the assessment of examinations performed within the facility for technical and image quality, and accuracy.
  • Document any incidental findings that might impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician.
  • Exercise responsibility for the maintenance and accuracy of facility reports, database records and logs.
  • Education

  • Keeps updated on the knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and imaging equipment.
  • Educates patients / families regarding procedure and / or treatment to be performed as well as risk factors and prevention.
  • Participates in creating and sustaining a learning environment supported by evidenced based practice and research.
  • Participates in the mentoring and education of technologists and students.
  • Works with peers and other health care providers. Participates in ongoing in-service and educational seminars.
  • Assists with the orientation and training of new staff.
  • Maintains and updates the diagnostic / x-ray protocol book.
  • Compliance / Safety

  • Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations / statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.
  • If required for position, ensures all certifications and / or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
  • Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.
  • Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas / RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
  • Qualifications

    Education :

    Applied Associates of Science degree in Radiological Technology - Required

    Bachelor's of Radiology Science or related field - Preferred

    Certification & Licensures :

    Current certification (ARRT) with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists - Required

    AZDHS Certified Radiologic Technologist – Required

    Current ARRT registry in MRI or ARMRIT - Required

    Fingerprint Clearance Card application number- Required upon hire

    Fingerprint Clearance Card- Required within 90 days of hire

    BLS (American Heart Assoc.)- Required

    Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their department leader

    Experience :

    Minimum 2 year’s experience as a Diagnostic / Xray Technologist in an acute care setting –Required

    Minimum 1 year experience as a lead - Preferred
