Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Infusion Center Manager, the Medical Assistant supports the Infusion nursing team by assisting with the administration of IV therapies, monitoring patient comfort, and performing front and back office clerical tasks. The Medical Assistant also ensures patient care by preparing patients for treatments, recording vital signs, and maintaining medical supplies. The Medical Assistant performs duties with specific knowledge and training in administrative and patient care within the business and profession code of the State of California and / or the regulations of The Joint Commission (TJC).

Essential Job Duties
Schedules patient appointments and associated patient system screens; accurate billing; environmental care functions; equipment / supply management; and cleaning / disinfecting the environment.
Carry out clinical duties such as taking vital signs, transporting medications, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, drawing blood, sterilizing and cleaning equipment and maintaining examination rooms and supplies.
Escorts patients to exam rooms, measures and records their weight and obtains accurate vital signs and reports abnormalities to the RN / NP and / or the provider responsible for the patient.
Maintains inventory of supplies in the infusion suites, replenish as required. Maintains clean and orderly exam rooms, hallways and work areas.
Prepares infusion suites prior to patient’s visit to ensure that proper equipment and supplies are set up for the required infusions and treatments. Cleans exam room following visits.
Collects and sends specimens to laboratory / appropriate labs for testing per procedure. Follows guidelines for proper handling of specimens for transport. Provides and documents point of care testing.
Reports patient’s concerns and symptoms, reactions, changes (appropriate to age) to the RN, NP and / or the provider assigned to the patient.
Documents clinical information, including patient phone calls and maintains accurate and complete patient documentation in the Electronic Medical Record.
Required Education / Experience
High school graduate or GED
Graduation from an accredited school of Medical Assisting
1 year of direct back-office Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory or outpatient clinic setting.
Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, computer systems and computer software used in functional area.
Proficient use of the equipment used in the Infusion Center (e.g., automatic vital signs machine; weighing scale; nurse call system; portable oxygen tanks)
Proficient knowledge of inventory management practices.
Strong ability to prioritize multiple tasks and handle a high volume of interactions (phones, patients, etc.)
Strong ability to perform standard clinical procedures according to established protocols, within the Medical Assistant scope of work.
Intermediate Excel skills.
Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
Preferred Education / Experience
Experience in an Infusion Center setting.
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or another certifying agency.
Bilingual in English and Spanish
Basic knowledge of Medical Coding and Billing
Licensure / Certification / Registration :

CIBD is a part of a nationwide network of over 140 Hemophilia Treatment Centers that use multidisciplinary teams of blood disorder specialists to provide expert comprehensive diagnosis, medical care, outreach, education, outcomes monitoring, surveillance, and prevention services to people with hemophilia, Sickle-Cell Anemia, Thalassemia, Von Willebrand Disease, and other related hematology conditions. CIBD is the regional grantee for the Western States Region / Region IX providing regional leadership, fiscal and administrative oversight, grants management, capacity building, clinical education, technical assistance, evaluation, and outreach to public and private health agencies at the local, state, and federal levels.
