Job description

Facility Operations Assistant 1 Grounds

This is an entry-level opportunity. Incumbent will assist skilled and semiskilled trades positions by performing duties involving the use of elementary skills of the mechanical, building, motor equipment and electrical trades. Incumbent may occasionally operate motor vehicles and power-driven equipment.

Essential Functions :

  • Carry and hold construction materials and tools.
  • Thread and connect pipe as directed.
  • Assists skilled trades' persons when needed.
  • Unplug stoppages.
  • Nailing, tightening bolts, driving screws, fishing cable and other manual tasks as directed.
  • Replace bulbs, fuses, and switches.
  • Reviews the Work order system daily and provides appropriate feedback.
  • Performs snow removal tasks as assigned.
  • Performs routine and emergency tasks involving scheduled / unscheduled overtime.
  • Removes asbestos during projects and facilitates repairs.
  • Handles various types of hazardous materials such as : asbestos, refrigerants, gas, fuel oil, solvents, and more.
  • Works in confined space situations using personal protective equipment.
  • Uses / wears personal protective equipment when necessary.
  • Clean shop and clean up after repair work.

Operating Needs :

  • Has the capacity to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Possesses interpersonal skills.
  • Possesses a valid NYS Driver License.
  • Must be able to obtain Operations and Maintenance certification for asbestos removal.

    • Job Requirements :

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade or trades to which assigned.
  • Possesses knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
  • Performs moderate to heavy manual labor.
  • Understands and carries out written and oral instructions.
  • Can climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms.
  • Uses the tools, machines, equipment, and materials of the trade or trades to which assigned.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

    • Working Environment :

    Exposure to indoor and outdoor atmosphere.
