EMT - EMS Transport Services

Position Summary

The EMT will assist the EMS Transport Services team to provide safe and timely ground transport of patients. This position will require the EMT to transfer injured or critically ill patients between hospitals and other healthcare facilities. The ability to adapt to new skills and information is essential to succeed in this role. This position is physically demanding and requires excellent driving and customer service skills along with computer skills. It is essential that EMT’s in this capacity are comfortable with providing out-of-hospital care and willing to learn new skills to facilitate the transfer of patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide safe and efficient patient transport , delivering basic life support (BLS) care according to established protocols and under the supervision of a Paramedic or Medical Director.
  • Assess and monitor patients during transport , reporting changes in condition and assisting with stabilization measures as appropriate.
  • Document patient care activities accurately and completely, including assessments, interventions, and communications in compliance with UNC Health Appalachian and regulatory standards.
  • Perform daily vehicle and equipment inspections , ensuring readiness, cleanliness, and safety; report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and medical personnel , demonstrating professionalism, compassion, and respect throughout all interactions.
  • Support emergency department operations and patient flow when not actively engaged in transport duties, assisting nursing and clinical teams as needed.
  • Promote a culture of safety and teamwork , adhering to infection control, hazardous materials, and safety protocols while modeling UNC Health Appalachian’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Position Requirements

    Minimum Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required at time of hire.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  • Experience

  • One (1) year of EMT experience in a 911 system or transport service is preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of scope of a EMT and experience.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public, patients, family, staff, and physicians; acts within the chain of command, utilizing positive verbal and non-verbal skills.
  • Ability to resolve conflict and maintain integrity in occasional high-stress situations in an ever-changing environment.
  • Knowledge of the continuum of care.
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, family, staff, and physicians.
  • Computer skills including data entry and the EMR.
  • Required Registration / License / Certification

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) provider certification
  • Valid unrestricted North Carolina Driver’s License in compliance with company insurance.
  • Completion of an emergency vehicle driver training course within one year of hire.
  • Physical Demands

  • Lifts, positions, pushes, pulls, and / or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and mobility.
  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable sitting / standing / walking.
  • Bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
  • Near acuity : ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
  • Working Conditions

  • Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases.
  • Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical / mechanical / power equipment, odorous chemicals, and specimens and unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces), etc.
  • Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and emergencies.
  • Continuous standing and walking long periods = to or greater than >

  • 3 feet away.

  • Frequently per hour, exposed to close eye work.
  • Infrequently per shift, may be exposed to ionizing / non-ionizing radiation exposure, including x-ray and microwave.
