Description :

Med / Surg Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.

In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Med / Surg Nurses include consulting and coordinating with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.

They prepare and administer medications (orally, subcutaneously, IV) and record prescribed medications.

They report adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by licensed registered nurses.

Educating patients on surgical procedures is a key responsibility.

Nurses record patients' medical information and vital signs.

They monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on patients, interpreting and recording electronic displays.

Initiating corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptoms is essential.

They provide bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients.

They initiate patient education plans as prescribed by physicians.

Teaching patients and significant others how to manage their illness or injury is required.

This includes explaining post-treatment home care needs.

Nurses change dressings, insert catheters, and start IVs.

They prepare equipment and aid physicians during examinations and treatments of patients.

Responding to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocols is necessary.

Participation in discharge planning is expected.

Utilizing time management skills is important.

Med / Surg Nurses record all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the correct forms.

Other position-related duties may be assigned, depending on the assignment setting.
