Description
Under general supervision of the Missouri Valley Special Collections (MVSC) Sr. Librarian, this position provides local history and genealogy reference at the Missouri Valley Room service desk, assists researchers with print, digital, and microfilm resources, and retrieves requested materials. Lends support to research projects and performs other department duties as assigned.
Basic Information
- Reports to Missouri Valley Special Collections (MVSC) Sr. Librarian.
- 24 hours per week.
- $20.05 per hour with some benefits.
- Position open until filled.
Schedule
Wednesday, Thursday, & Saturday : 8 : 30 am - 5 pm
One Sunday per month : 12 pm - 5 pm.
Note : The schedule is non negotiable.

Job Duties (Essential Functions)
Patron Service
Provides reference service in-person, by telephone, and email.Instructs and assists patrons in the effective use of Missouri Valley Special Collections and other Library resources.Maintains courteous and effective working relationships with internal and external customers.Conducts tours and delivers presentations to highlight MVSC collections, services, and research tools.Enforces MVSC policies related to materials handling and research room use to ensure the preservation and security of collections.Collections Maintenance
Assists with creating and editing item records for KCHistory.org.Retrieves and shelves requested materials in the Missouri Valley Room and closed stacks.Assists with indexing and basic arrangement of archival collections.Organizes and maintains the browsing book display in the Missouri Valley Room.Completes collection shifting and organization projects in the closed stacks area.General
Orders supplies and maintains the Missouri Valley Room's periodicals collection.Contributes content to the Library's local history blog and social media platforms.Curates in-room displays and recommended reading lists to promote MVSC collections and resources.Requirements
Comfortable serving as the first point of contact at a public reference desk.Customer service-focused with a professional, personable demeanor.Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with both the public and staff.Capable of multi-tasking and prioritizing customer requests in a fast-paced environment.Basic knowledge of library operations, collections, and services.Willingness and ability to learn a variety reference resources, including print, digital, and microform formats.Basic troubleshooting skills for public computers, photocopiers, and microfilm readers.Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and use a step ladder to retrieve materials.Flexible availability, including regularly scheduled Saturday shifts and one Sunday per month.Ability to speak and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages used in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.Required Education and Experience
Knowledge of Kansas City history.Established proficiency in database searching and digital resources, especially historical and genealogical resources.One - three years of customer service experience or experience working a library reference desk preferred.Bachelor's degree in Library Science, History, or related degree preferred. The degree preference may be substituted with three years of work experience in a library, museum, or related cultural heritage institution.Work Environment
Work is performed at the Central Library. Primary workspace is shared with co-workers in an office environment. Other work will be performed in a public space amongst staff and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
