Loss Control Consultant Commercial Insurance – Independent Contractor - Detroit, MI

Position overview and requirements for an independent contractor role in risk assessment and loss control for commercial insurance clients in Detroit, MI.

Overview

EXL Risk Control provides risk assessments and loss control surveys to commercial lines insurance carriers. This role involves scheduling and conducting on-site surveys, evaluating risk, and delivering risk improvement reports to underwriting teams. The consultant may work from home or an office and will travel to local commercial operations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule on-site surveys and provide risk evaluation and risk improvement reports for insurance industry clients.
  • Manage assignments, secure customer appointments within a local territory, and complete work on time.
  • Conduct risk evaluation surveys and risk improvement service requests using your education and professional certifications.
  • Assess risk for various commercial insurance lines of business, including Property, General Liability, Workers' Compensation, Auto / Fleet, Products Liability, Inland Marine, and Builders Risk.
  • Work on special projects or more challenging risk evaluation surveys as needed.
  • Operate as a home-based or office-based consultant with travel to retail, hospitality, manufacturing, construction, and other commercial sites.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of Risk Control Consulting experience with a major carrier and / or national brokerage (preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills and computer proficiency.
  • Experience in commercial insurance, inspections, or fire and safety assessments (preferred).
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Safety, or the physical sciences (preferred).
  • CSP or ARM designations (preferred but not required).
  • Experience with Commercial Lines Property / Casualty Loss Control, Underwriting, and Claims is a plus.
  • Licensed insurance agents / producers : no (as noted in the listing).
