Job Summary

The Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides orthotic and prosthetic services in both the inpatient and outpatient environment. The department has three office locations providing off-the-shelf and custom orthopaedic devices. Working under general supervision of the Department Director and specific supervision of the unit Clinical Manager, the technician is responsible for assisting with the creation of custom prosthetic and orthotic devices by fabricating constituent parts and assembling those parts into completed devices. The technician is also responsible for stocking and ordering fabrication inventory and maintaining lab cleanliness.

The fabrication of Orthotic and Prosthetic devices requires knowledge of and experience with plaster models, socket lamination, foam shaping, thermoforming plastics and other materials, the mechanical principles related to orthotic and prosthetic use and the mechanical and technical craftsmanship to use laboratory tools safely and effectively. The Development Technician I must be able to work from oral or written instruction with direct supervision, to fabricate prosthetic and orthotic components, and to perform assembly of those components into a final prosthesis or orthosis. It is expected that the Dev Tech I produces consistent products that are in keeping with quality standards set by the Clinical Manger. The Dev Tech I is expected to have excellent time management and planning skills needed to meet fabrication deadlines. Good verbal communication skills, basic computer knowledge : able to carry and push / pull over 60 pounds.

Please note : The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is responsible for the department's academic, teaching, patient care, professional services, and research activities under the UCSF School of Medicine. The department has over 250 academic and staff personnel at multiple sites (UC, Mt. Zion, MB, SFGH, and VAMC). The Orthotic and Prosthetic Department provides joint patents care with numerous services across the UCSF health care system.

• Excellent Technical aptitude. Demonstrated mechanical ability and hand eye coordination is required to use laboratory tools safely and effectively
