Job description

The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health (HDPFH) at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health is a vibrant and interdisciplinary department comprising of faculty, scientists, thought leaders, and practitioners from the fields of public health, epidemiology, demography, social work, medicine, economics, and law. We apply multidisciplinary population science and public health research methods to address critical domestic and global challenges, including sexual and reproductive health rights, forced migration, child and adolescent health, maternal and newborn health, mental health, environmental justice, human rights, and complex health systems. The Department's current research portfolio totals $21 million in multi-year committed awards from private foundations and federal funding sources, internal grants, service agreements and gifts to support both international and U.S. based research, service, and program. The Department works to shift global health policy and practice to improve health systems and health outcomes for populations in low-income, unstable, or inequitable environments worldwide. Faculty in this largely grant-funded department engage in a unique combination of research, teaching and service activities. Graduates of the Department pursue careers as research scientists, non-profit leaders, and public health practitioners and evaluators who actively contribute to scientific developments and assume important academic posts and public health leadership globally.

The HDPFH seeks to expand its reach and impact by fostering partnerships that build on the Department's historical strengths while addressing emerging issues to reinforce its position as a global leader in public health and population science. These include challenges at the intersections of population health and mega trends such as climate change, growing conflicts and inequality, demographic shifts, and technological innovation. The Department is recruiting a development scientist specializing in child health, development, well-being, and family system dynamics.

The successful applicant is expected to have an emerging or well-developed independent research portfolio, depending on rank, including scholarly contributions to scientific literature, externally funded research, and national / international recognition in their field of interest. We seek candidates who will help to further develop the Department and School's children's health and early childhood development research, educational, and policy agenda. The individual will be encouraged to collaborate across disciplines and departments within the School and the University. Our child, adolescent and family-related work spans local community activity and major global efforts. We seek candidates who will conceptualize research, identify funding sources, prepare proposals, establish research collaborations, and carry out funded projects. We are seeking a candidate with a strong interdisciplinary understanding of child development, health, nutrition, education, psychology, and social protection, and the ability to integrate these areas into their scholarship.

The incumbent will add to the child and adolescent health expertise of the Department and serve in several key roles in research, coursework and student programming. Opportunities include participation in the newly endowed Child Health Center for Learning and Development, a collaboration working to improve health, well-being and developmental opportunities for school-age children by promoting interdisciplinary science, education and practice-based solutions through academic-community partnerships. Committed to positive change in the lives of children, youth, families, and communities, the aim of the Center is to address long-standing gaps in health / mental health, educational achievement and workforce development by bringing research, training and practice out of the laboratory and into community-based organizations and New York City schools.

It is expected that the successful candidate will teach one or more departmental courses related to child and adolescent health. This could include courses contributing to the Department's advanced certificate in Child, Youth and Family Health, a curriculum that addresses many public health problems-such as asthma, obesity, mental health problems, and high-risk behaviors for sexually transmitted diseases-that have roots in early childhood. The incumbent will also mentor students and actively engage in the academic life of the Department, including student advising and committee membership. A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, community organizations and other external partners is critical to this position.

Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The selected candidate will receive an academic appointment, as non-tenured or tenure track, commensurate with credentials and qualifications.

Minimum Degree Required :

  • Requires a PhD, MD, or professional equivalent.
  • A doctoral degree in human development, public health, social science, social work, human development and family studies, education or a related field is required.

  • Strong teaching, presentation and writing skills.

  • Ability and willingness to contribute to the development of the Department's and School's research, education, and policy agenda related to diversity, equity and inclusion. This includes conceptualizing research, identifying funding sources, preparing proposals, establishing research collaborations and carrying out funded projects.
  • Strong background in research and a robust body of peer reviewed publications.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Proven experience in developing or managing government or privately funded grants. Demonstrated experience with NIH grants is advantageous.
  • Research experience focused on the intersections of early childhood development, health, nutrition, education, psychology, and social protection, both within the United States and in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Previous experience coordinating or holding a leadership role within an academic institution.
  • Experience of leading and conducting research projects across scientific disciplines and translating findings into actionable programmatic and policy recommendations.
  • Experience conducting experimental studies using large datasets and community-based randomized controlled trials, with a focus on scaling interventions, programs, and policies.
