Function
Utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of healthcare needs with ambulatory care as primary focus. Works with a variety of healthcare professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Frequently functions guided by nursing protocols. Functions as a team leader as assigned.
Examples of Work
- Responds to and initiates care for medical emergencies throughout the facility. This includes the ability to perform continuous CPR until properly relieved.
- Administers and documents medications on the Medication Administration Record.
- Performs histories and physicals on inmates.
- Assesses patient health status and refers to appropriate level of healthcare provider.
- Physically assists the Physician in patient examinations and treatments.
- Documents all nursing care provided.
- Implements and follows up on Physician / Dentist verbal and written orders.
- Teaches healthcare information to patients and correctional staff.
- Adheres to safety and security policies and participates in disaster drills.
- Performs venipuncture and I.V. therapy.
- Collect samples, specimens and cultures per Physician orders.
- Follows security regulations for keys, sharps and controlled medications.
- Delegates and supervises other team members as appropriate.
- Adheres to universal precautions and other appropriate infection control practices.
- Ability to deal with and respond to stressful situations in a stressful environment.

Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the inmate-patient within the framework established by the correctional systemPerforms assessments of inmate-patient in a variety of settings such as initial intake area, health care unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic care clinics and infirmary. Utilizes assessment skills that require a knowledge base for both normal and abnormal adult health status. Communicates assessment data in a comprehensive, orderly fashion verbally and in writingPlans nursing care by identification of inmate-patient needs bases on assessments. Makes appropriate, timely referral and initiates appropriate nursing care based on institutional policies and procedures. Documents plans appropriatelyImplements nursing care and medical care orders in a knowledgeable, safe and cost-effective manner. Documents nursing care and appropriate medically directed care in accordance with institutional policies and procedures. Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment. Must conform to security clearance and place of employment.
