Roanoke County Public Schools is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Elementary School Counselor at Glen Cove beginning January 5, 2026.
Applicants must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Virginia prior to August 2025.
Position Description / Job Summary :
Counselors will demonstrate the ability to establish productive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members. Counselors will provide individual and group counseling to students along with performing a variety of additional roles and functions.
Responsibilities / Duties / Functions / Tasks :
Coordinate Comprehensive School Counseling Program :
- Provide academic, social, and career activities for students
- Engage in individual and group counseling with students
- Provide school counseling services for all students
- Follow ASCA National model for School Counseling Code of Ethics
- Gather, interpret, and use data regarding student as part of the counseling process
- Demonstrate a warm and accepting attitude toward children, parents, families, staff, and stake holders
- Make referrals and coordinate services to staff, community resources and public or private agencies
- Consult and collaborate with teachers, parents, administrators and other professional personnel
- Provide for the annual evaluation of the comprehensive school counseling program in the school
- Implement a program that reflects the Virginia Dept. Of Education SOL standards for counseling
Crisis Intervention :
Assess students and provide resources for students and familiesServe on school crisis teamLead student support interventions before, during, and after crisis situationsIdentify and take appropriate action in problem / crisis situationsThreat Assessment Team Member :
Member of threat assessment teamAttend required threat assessment training as offeredParticipate in all threat assessments in assigned schoolsSupports Families & Staff :
Interpret counseling program to school staff, parents, students, and the communityServe as a resource person to parents on the growth and development of their childrenCoordinate in-service programming to assist the staff in understanding and meeting children's needsBullying Education & Prevention :
Provide staff training on bullying prevention, intervention, reporting and policyProvide student education on bullying prevention and reportingImplement evidenced based bullying curriculum with fidelityLead bullying committee through school's core teamCoordinates the Bullying Prevention programSupports Students :
Provide developmentally appropriate classroom program activates for all studentsAssist students in the development of positive and realistic self- conceptsProvide activities to help students understand themselves and their relationships with othersPBIS :
Serve on PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) committee and coach / assist staff, student, and administration with PBIS programCareer Education :
Maintain career portfolio for students,Teach developmentally appropriate career lesson for each gradeRetain appropriate career documentation in career portfoliofor each grade levelOther Duties as required :
Assist with the coordination and interpretation of standardized testingPlan and coordinate orientation programsShow concern for care and use of materials, supplies, and equipmentMember of the child study teamAttend staff trainingsAttend child study, 504, and IEP meetings as requestedComply with confidentiality regulations and lawsFollow all RCPS policies and proceduresPerforms other duties as assigned by principal and central office counselingMinimum Job Requirements / Qualifications :
Be able to perform multiple, highly complex technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions; Be able to communicate effectively to implement desired actions; Be flexible to independently or collaboratively work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; Be able to analyze data and reports to help determine student needs within the division; Be able to establish professional relationships and communicate effectively with administration, faculty, and parents; Be able to set priorities and meet deadlines; Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
Education and Experience :
Master's Degree in School Counseling
Experienced with children and adolescents, required
