DESCRIPTION

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine, with approximately 171 Faculty Members, 60 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs), and over 300 support staff (excluding hospital staff). Additionally, the Department has 57 clinical residents and fellows, distributed across the Various Divisions. The missions of research, education, and patient care are intertwined and are integral to the goals of the department.

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner provides primary care for the high risk neonate and participates in the development and implementation of educational programs related to the high risk neonate and their family. The neonatal nurse practitioner functions from the time of birth of the high risk infant through their discharge : practices in collaboration with and under the direct supervision of an attending neonatologist; plans and presents in-service education to large groups in the community as well as within the medical center; writes and implements policies and procedures regarding the care of the high risk neonate; and participates in and may initiate research studies. Under the supervision of the Neonatal Director, the NNP directs the management of patient care of neonates by 4th year medical students and orients and directs patient care of neonates by interns during their rotation.

NNPs each manage a case load of critically ill neonates. They act as a liaison and in collaboration with other medical center departments, community agencies, and consultants. Other duties include supporting the development of guidelines and employee and student orientation packets. They teach courses on various subjects regarding neonatal care to medical students and interns, leads formal patient care conferences and lead rounds in the absence of the Fellow or attending. They also participate on external transports for critical newborns to the medical center and lead resuscitation in high-risk deliveries.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

National NP board certification in aligned specialty with the practice area.

BLS / CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

NRP certification.

Minimum two (2) years of recent work experience as a licensed Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP). Experience must include attending high-risk deliveries.

Proven knowledge and skill in performing a comprehensive neonatal assessment and general medical examination, identifying medical problems and formulate appropriate plan of action. Must be able to see patients independently.

Experience providing patient education and counseling and developing and implementing long and short range treatment plans. Skill in patient interviewing, obtaining a concise medical history, and acquiring pertinent data.

Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.

Knowledge of the name, abbreviation, and purpose of various diagnostic tests / procedures, including proper scheduling and completion of necessary requisitions and consents.

Strong computer skills and knowledge of PCIS / Epic for retrieval of patient data (computer skills required; PCIS / Epic preferred).

Demonstrated experience working in a clinical research environment. Ability to identify potential clinical trials patients.

Experience in research techniques, such as following a protocol, and in collecting all data precisely.

Knowledge of study formats, with ability to edit charts and resolve inconsistencies.

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Experience interacting positively, constructively, and effectively with staff, physicians, patients and the general public.

Experience in performing effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload and frequent interruptions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Five (5+) or more years of NICU RN experience.

Delivery room experience.

Level III / IV NICU experience.

Work experience in an Academic Medical Center.

PICC certification.

Spanish language proficiency.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Work locations are primarily UC San Diego Health's Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla and Hillcrest Medical Center.
  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two (2) years.
  • Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $167,687 - $234,649 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $80.31 - $112.38

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
