You will start on a steady day shift (Mon–Fri, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and, after qualifying, transition into a rotational schedule that includes six days on, two days off, ensuring variety and challenge.

Position Description
Under minimal supervision, you will operate, maintain, and repair heat generation equipment, facilities, and auxiliary equipment within the BNL Central Steam Facility. You may also be responsible for directing or checking the work of others in connection with your responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Operate equipment safely, following safety rules and procedures, and participate in safety programs such as confined space and lock-out / tag-out.Maintain records and logbooks of rounds and inspections.Monitor and secure boilers and related equipment, recognizing abnormal conditions and taking corrective actions.Perform routine and demand maintenance to ensure optimal plant efficiency.Conduct daily chemical testing of systems such as boilers, water softeners, and condensate systems.Carry out scheduled maintenance on boilers and auxiliary equipment.Maintain high standards of housekeeping, inventory, and tool maintenance.The above duties are not exhaustive but represent the major responsibilities of the role.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
At least 7 years of experience operating and maintaining high-pressure steam plants, or a relevant technical degree / certification such as US Navy training or a recognized license.Ability to understand and operate boilers and control systems, including computer-based controls and safety systems.Strong decision-making skills and mechanical aptitude.Proficiency in reading, writing, and verbal communication.Ability to work 8-hour rotating shifts and extended hours if needed.Valid NYS Driver's license.Preferred Qualifications :
Knowledge of NFPA 85 – Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code.Experience with fuel oil handling and spill control.US Coast Guard License as 3rd assistant engineer or higher; municipal license is highly desirable.Environmental, Safety, and Health Considerations :
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and at heights up to 50 feet.Use of safety equipment including respirators.Work outdoors and in warm or cold environments.Operate machinery and tools, including forklifts and cranes.Follow lock-out / tag-out procedures and wear PPE.The Lab's policy is to select the most qualified candidate.
