Smith College is hiring : Assistant Professor of English Language and Literature

Overview The Department of English at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2026. Successful candidates should be prepared to engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts.

Responsibilities Teach four courses per year : Shakespeare and / or Milton, an early British literature survey, and electives in the period depending upon the candidate's field of specialization.

Contribute to a liberal arts environment and support student learning across a range of courses and settings.

Qualifications Ph.D. in English or a relevant field is expected by the time of appointment.

Strong foundation in Early Modern British literary studies; experience in teaching is encouraged.

Desirable sub-fields include race and empire, intersectional gender, sexuality and queer studies, disability studies, environmental studies, global Renaissance, among others.

Candidates from groups underrepresented in the field are encouraged to apply.
