Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching.

We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 3,450 majors and we enroll undergraduate students in over 7,870 seats in our classes each semester. Each fall or spring semester, we offer 52 classes (70 sections) and 13 lab courses (93 sections). Our average total annual expenditure exceeds $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research. Our department has nearly $70 million in active grants to support our twin missions of research and teaching. Our large research base spans many areas of biology and supports several outstanding graduate programs. We consist of 48 tenure-track faculty, 11 teaching faculty, 5 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty who are engaged in basic and interdisciplinary research and teaching, both within the department and between other departments and schools at UNC.

We currently have 50 graduate students and 30 post-docs and employ approximately 85 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions. Further, we are supported by an administrative staff of 20, with an additional 20 staff directly supporting research.

Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

This position will be responsible for securing and optimizing our Microsoft 365 cloud environment with a strong emphasis on identity lifecycle management, access governance, and security configuration. Responsibilities include managing account provisioning, deprovisioning, and role-based access controls, as well as working directly with customers to troubleshoot and resolve account-related issues.

A key responsibility of this role is maintaining open communication with University- and College-level information services groups to help the department anticipate, recognize, and prepare for policy and infrastructure changes.

This position will also contribute to documentation, training, audit readiness, and continuous improvement initiatives related to access controls, data protection, and security monitoring.

This work requires strong communication skills, an ability to effectively interact with a broad range of end-users / clients, and an ability to use a variety of technical resources for providing this support.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in Computer Information Technology, computer Technology Integration, Networking Technology, or related area and one year of experience in the information technology field related to the position's role; or

  • Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year experience in the information technology field related to the position's role; or
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, math or engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Journey level required an additional one year of experience
  • Advanced level required an additional two years of experience.

  • Proficient with Microsoft enterprise IT environment
  • Proven experience providing advanced technical support, security management, and system maintenance of Windows-based products, Microsoft 365 (M365) applications / cloud services, and Active Directory
  • Strong understanding of M365 security, compliance, and identity governance features
  • Experience with identity lifecycle management concepts and tools
  • Experience with Apple ecosystem
  • Proven experience providing advanced technical support, security management, and system maintenance for Apple products and macOS environments
  • Proficient in the administration and security of Apple devices, including macOS laptops and desktops

  • PowerShell scripting skills for automation and reporting are a plus
  • CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification, or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire
  • Microsoft certifications such as SC-300 : Identity and Access Administrator and SC-900 : Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals
  • Experience in M365 security, Microsoft Defender for M365, Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD), and Microsoft Purview Compliance Manager environments
  • Experience with SolarWinds, ServiceNow, or a similar request tracking system
