Job description

Under general supervision, facilitates the safe, effective and economic use of drugs in a fiscally responsible manner. Reviews prescriptions, obtains clarification as necessary and regularly consults with medical staff, nursing personnel and others in order to coordinate delivery of high quality pharmaceutical services to outpatient infusion patients and Hospital patients.

Education & Experience

Pharm D from an accredited college or university or BS in Pharmacy from an accredited pharmacy school, college or university with 0-3 years of experience.

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of current theory and practice of proper pharmacy services.
  • Knowledge of oncology pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, adverse drug reactions and drug interactions and ability to interpret clinical laboratory data.
  • Skill in sterile compounding and safe handling of hazardous dugs including chemotherapeutic agents.
  • Familiarity with oncology guidelines such as NCCN and ASCO.
  • Skill in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability or organize and prioritize the day to day activities to be most efficient when assigned to specific patient care units.
  • Skill in problem assessment and resolution.
  • Ability to coordinate the work of others when tasked.
  • Knowledge of personnel practices such as monitoring attendance, evaluating & improving performance, and handling employee complaints.
  • Skill in managing teams.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Good critical thinking skills.

Licensures, Certifications

  • Current Maryland State Pharmacist License.
  • Oncology Certified Pharmacist (BCOP) preferred
  • Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Enters, verifies and dispenses medication orders in accordance with scope of professional license and ensures proper recordation of drug use including ordering, storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals, including controlled substances.
  • Reviews treatment plans and therapy plans for drugs used in the center ( antineoplastics and other drugs) for clinical appropriateness, to include correct dosing, drug interactions, and organ function adjustments.
  • Evaluates lab results, other tests and vital signs to ensure safe medication administration.
  • Collaborates with oncologists, providers, nurses and other care teams to build, review, and optimize treatment plans and therapy plans, making necessary adjustments as needed.
  • Verifies and approves chemotherapy orders and regimens according to standard practice guidelines.
  • Supervises pharmacy technicians in the aseptic compounding of chemotherapy and other sterile products per USP
  • and

    standards while ensuring compliance with state and federal laws, and GBMC policies and procedures.

  • Maintains documentation for sterile compounding logs, investigational drug accountability and waste disposal.
  • Performs final checks on compounded medications before dispensing.
  • Organizes daily operations of the main infusion center and the satellite center(s).
  • Closely reviews work of pharmacy interns and technicians, and when needed, performs the duties of a preceptor for pharmacy students.
  • Advises physicians and nurses about drug interactions, incompatibilities, side effects, instructions for drug administration, and the matters pertaining to the optimum use of medications. Resolves any issues pertaining to medication use, clarifying orders, and providing drug information between patient care areas and the Infusion Pharmacy.
  • Performs MUE (Medical Use Evaluations). Facilities the safe, effective and economic use of drugs in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Readily accepts challenges and performs assignments utilizing critical thinking skills.
  • Identifies and anticipates issues, takes responsibility for correcting it with a well-thought-out solution.
  • Participates in interviewing & hiring new employees, and oversees the orientation & training of new & current employees.
  • Willingly mentors and trains colleagues, co-workers, newly hired pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, interns and students.
  • Reads e-mail daily on scheduled work days.
  • Follows-up on the reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions and assists with the quality improvement activities in the department.
  • Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk and stand up to one hundred percent (100%) of work time.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.

  • Pay Range

    $49.15 - $86.50

    Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience and alignment with our organizational needs.
