The crater is responsible for building crates to house coils and unit coolers during transportation.

Essential functions

• Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Layout, cut, and fabricate crates for coils and unit coolers.
• Read specifications and inspect the product to determine the size and shape of the container, materials to be used, and types of supports, braces to be used.
• Layout dimensions on material with a ruler, measuring tape. Saw materials to size. Assemble materials.
• Place product in the container. Bolt heavy pieces to the bottom of the container or skid.
• Wrap and pad product with excelsior, paper, or other packing material.
• Build crate around large or odd-shaped articles. Nail cover on the crate.
• Wrap and tighten metal bands around the crate.
• Attach identification labels or stencils containing such information as shipping destination, weight, and type of product contained on the crate.
• Repair broken crates.
• Count items to be packed to ensure compliance with shipping orders. Weigh-loaded crate.
• Move the container to the shipping area, and move lumber, paper, and other wrapping supplies to crating area. Sharpen saw blades.
• Check work and ensure quality.
• Contribute to team effort by working with others and accomplishing related functions as needed.
• Complete any task as assigned by the supervisor as needed.
• Comply with government regulations, laws, company policies, and company procedures.
• Work overtime as necessary.
• Attend work as required.
• Arrive for work on time.
• Charge time accurately in time and attendance system on the computer to ensure accurate labor distribution and payroll.
• Follow manufacturing instructions, work by oneself without constant supervision, be self-motivated, and complete job assignments on time.
• Care for tools and equipment. Advise maintenance of equipment that is not working properly.
• Clean work area as required.

Desired qualifications

Education & Experience : A high school level of education is preferred for this position in order to continue upward advancement in the company. The employee must be able to understand directions from superiors.

Skills : Effective communications skills, good listening skills, ability to read and comprehend written instructions, basic mathematical skills, ability to control operations of equipment or system, good people skills in order to work in teams with others in the organization.

Certificates, licenses or training : on-site training, forklift license

level / grade

1 – Beginning level crater meets minimal quality standards, needs more time to complete work than estimated for job

2 – Proficient level crater meets quality standards, able to complete work within estimated hours for job

3 – Proficient level crater meets quality standards, able to complete work in less time than estimated for job

Interaction with others

Answers to QC & QA Supervisor. Must be able to accurately receive, understand & follow instructions from supervisor / lead. It is essential that the employee be able to work with all employees of the RAE team and show a spirit of cooperation with others in the organization. To accomplish this teamwork, it is important that the employee be able to get along well with coworkers and be willing to ask and to answer questions as needed.

working environment

Work is performed in an industrial production area for a manufacturer of refrigeration and HVAC equipment. The employee is constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is high in some areas. Exposed to extreme temperatures in both winter and summer. Possible stress caused by the pressure of meeting deadlines and product quality standards and seasonal variations in hours worked based on production demands.

Other Physical Requirements : Sustained use of eyesight for functions such as visual inspection, reading, measuring and operating hand tools, along with the ability to see objects and detect motion at wide angles (peripheral vision) in order to maintain employee safety, ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (i.e. safety glasses, hearing protection)
