Job description

Context Corner is an independent, reader-supported newsroom for fact-based, context-driven journalism. We cover DFW and Texas with a focus on communities that legacy media under-serve—Muslim, immigrant, and working-class neighbors. We publish daily on our site, and distribute via email, WhatsApp, and social.

The Role (why it exists)

We’re hiring a Managing Editor & Video Showrunner to set the daily agenda and build a high-performing YouTube news operation. You’ll lead the story mix, report / host on camera, manage freelancers and offshore editors, and turn audience data into smarter coverage.

What You’ll Do (Day-to-day)

  • Editorial leadership : Set daily / weekly agenda; run pitches and approvals; enforce sourcing standards and corrections policy.
  • Showrunning for YouTube : Build 2–3 repeatable franchises (shorts + explainers + field reports); oversee scripts, shoots, thumbnails, and packaging.
  • Hands-on reporting / hosting : Report quick hits and 5–10 minute explainers; conduct interviews with community leaders and subject-matter experts.
  • Manage the bench : Assign and edit freelancers; coordinate with offshore video editors and site producer; maintain style guide.
  • Audience growth : Use YouTube Studio / GA4 / Search Console to improve CTR, retention, and conversions to email / membership.
  • Community presence : Build source maps (mosques, PTAs, labor groups, legal orgs); represent CC at events and listening sessions.
  • Safety & ethics : Apply our Editorial Code; manage legal risk (pre-pub review when needed); uphold ad / editorial firewall.

You’ll Thrive Here If You Have

  • 3–7 years in digital reporting / producing (local news or civic beats ideal).
  • On-camera presence and clean delivery under time pressure.
  • Fast scripting and line editing; comfort rewriting to time.
  • Working knowledge of media law (defamation, privacy), sourcing, and verification.
  • YouTube literacy : titles, hooks, thumbnails, retention, end-screens.
  • Basic production skills (phone camera, audio, b-roll) and the judgment to prioritize audio quality .
  • Experience managing freelancers or small teams.

    • Nice to have : data viz; FOIA experience; Premiere / CapCut / Descript; live formats; WhatsApp Channels.

    What success looks like (first 90 days)

  • Programming grid live; 2–3 Shorts / day cadence; 1 explainer / week .
  • 5,000 YouTube subs and +3,000 email subs; CTR ≥ 6% , AVD ≥ 35% on explainers.
  • 8 long-form videos published; 4 reported features / month from DFW beats.

  • Salary : Competitive base (DOE) + up to 10-15% KPI bonus (quarterly).
