At SMS group Inc. (North America), our Electrical and Automation Division drives innovation in the metals industry. We specialize in designing, testing, and commissioning advanced Process Automation Systems (Level 2 / Supervisory Control) that optimize production lines such as furnaces, casters, rolling mills, and process lines.
As an intern or co-op, you’ll be a valued member of our engineering team, contributing to projects that combine process knowledge with automation technology. What you’ll do
Your role will focus on process engineering and system analysis, supported by software development tasks. Depending on your assignment, you may be involved in :
Understand Production Processes : Learn flat rolling processes and their operational aspects including the role of plant operators. Requirements Gathering : Collaborate with engineers and end users to elicit functional requirements, akin to a business-analyst role. System Design & Validation : Assist in designing Level 2 automation functions that align with process needs. Software Development (Supporting Role) : Implement and test code for automation systems once requirements are clear. Data Analysis & Visualization : Use process data to improve decision-making and system performance. Documentation : Prepare clear documentation for process flows, system requirements, and implemented solutions.
Technical Exposure :
While process engineering is the primary focus, you will gain exposure to :
