Role : Mechanical Design Engineer

Location : Greater Chicago Area (onsite in Lake Forest, IL / some travel)

Type : Full-Time | Individual Contributor | Hands-On Design Role

A well-established engineering organization is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for a highly impactful, hands-on role focused on manufacturing-driven design new product development (NPD) , and complex mechanical problem solving

This opportunity is ideal for engineers who enjoy leading projects from concept to production, and who are looking to grow as a technical expert rather than pursue a people management track.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the full design lifecycle—from customer input through to production
Develop product concepts, create 3D CAD models, and manage prototyping and validation testing
Perform detailed tolerance stack-up analyses for multi-component assemblies
Select materials, coatings, and heat treatments for strength, wear resistance, and manufacturability
Design with manufacturing in mind, including plastic injection molding, stamping, aluminum casting, machining, and MIM
Apply engineering tools such as DFMEA, DOE, and FEA to assess and improve designs
Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, testing, and product teams
Independently manage technical problem solving and prototype builds

Qualifications

Required :

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering

6–12+ years of mechanical design experience

Advanced proficiency with 3D CAD tools (CREO required; surfacing and Windchill preferred)

Strong experience with tolerance stack-ups in complex assemblies

Solid understanding of strength of materials, metallurgy, heat treatment, and surface coatings

Hands-on experience with multiple manufacturing processes

Experience designing electro-mechanical systems in industries such as hand tools, power tools, consumer products, automotive, etc.

Comfortable working independently with minimal direction

Proven track record of long-term employment and commitment

Preferred :

Familiarity with engineering analysis software (MATLAB, Ansys, CFD, etc.)

Exposure to Six Sigma, Lean, or DFMEA methodologies

Project coordination experience in a design-focused role

Experience managing prototypes through to production
