Senior Reporter, Technology & Engineering, Scientific American. Location(s) : New York, Washington, DC or London – Hybrid Working.
Scientific American seeks an experienced senior reporter who can cover their beat across platforms and formats – whether that’s a deeply reported investigative feature, a quick breaking news post, a highly produced podcast series, or an off-the-cuff short social video. We want journalists who understand which platform is best for each story and can execute coverage across all of them. The role requires owning your beat, anticipating developments, and maintaining a strong network of sources. Topics of interest include emerging technologies, corporate innovation and R&D, and automation and robotics.
This role can be based in New York, Washington DC, or London on a hybrid working model.
Role Responsibilities
- Break news and land exclusive stories
- Be an influencer and essential voice in your chosen area of coverage
- Use news and feature stories, video and audio, and social media to cover your beat
- Coordinate with news editors and junior reporters to ensure breaking news is covered when advancing a story
- Collaborate with colleagues on Engagement and Multimedia teams
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
Essential
At least 5 years of experience as a full-time beat reporterA history of landing exclusives and breaking newsAn extensive network of sources and experts in your beat areaAn ability to show voice and personality in your writing and reportingA track record of telling stories in multiple formats, from long print features to short TikTok videosA smart and vibrant social media presence, and a track record of using social video to talk about newsDesirable
Experience as an on-stage moderator or speaker at in-person eventsExperience appearing on-camera or on-mic to talk about the newsAn undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field, or a graduate degree in science journalismA knowledge of and enthusiasm for all kinds of scienceBenefits and Compensation
US Annualized Base Salary : $105,000 - $120,000.
