Job description

Your Role : Tetra Tech Inc. is seeking professional, motivated, and intelligent candidates to fill two Archaeological Technical Writer positions for our Federal NEPA, NHPA, and Environmental Compliance team. These positions will predominantly focus on technical writing tasks in support of a large Department of Defense (DoD) project in the Northern Plains region, with an anticipated duration of approximately 3 to 5 years. Selected candidates may also engage in fieldwork, administrative duties, and project planning as part of the Tetra Tech Environmental Government Services cultural resource team supporting DoD and other contracts.

Responsibilities :

  • Support projects to include participation in the development of work plans, technical reports, Class III surveys, data collection, monitoring, evaluative testing, and site mitigation within multiple states (prior experience in the Great Plains highly desired).
  • Work independently on contract deliverables such as letter reports, technical reports, and work plans.
  • Support and report to Principal Archaeologists and Project Managers.
  • Work with clients to meet Section 106 compliance requirements.
  • Author cultural resource sections of NEPA documents.
  • Provide QA / QC of field data from large archaeological survey crews.
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to others in support of their functions.
  • Work in collaboration with Tribal Cultural Specialists to document and evaluate sites of cultural or religious significance to Native Americans.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.   • Proficiency in drafting archaeological technical reports.
  • Ability to interpret and synthesize archaeological data, to furnish reporting under Section 106 review and NEPA assessment.
  • Ability to evaluate cultural resources for eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places
  • Proficiency with ESRI products including Survey123, FieldMaps, and ArcPro is required.
  • Ability to identify, record, and analyze archaeological artifacts, features, and sites.
  • In-depth knowledge of NRHP and NEPA policy.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and / or local regulations and statutes.
  • Familiarity with DoD plans and processes highly desired.
  • This position requires the candidate to be a U.S. Citizen due to the projects they will be working on.

    Background Check (if applicable) : CUI access is needed.

    Education & Experience :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology / Archaeology with a concentration in North American Archaeology.
  • Preference given to applicant who meet the Secretary of the Interior's Qualifications for archaeology.
  • Must have attended an archaeological field school and have at least 5 years of North American cultural resource management experience working in the western US.
  • Archaeological knowledge and experience in the Great Plains.
  • Archaeological experience in other U.S. regions also valued.
  • Prior experience conducting document reviews and writing technical documents.
  • Direct experience with DoD cultural resource regulations and projects.
  • Direct experience with DoD Section 106 compliance; previous work with SHPOs and THPOs highly desired.
  • Previous experience with data management software highly desired.
  • Physical Demands : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The position primarily performs work in an (remote) office environment. However, limited field work may be required, primarily in the Great Plains geographic setting. Field work will involve traversing uneven terrain, standing, and walking for extended periods of time and will require lifting up to 50 pounds. Note that office work may be fully remote.

    Work Environment : The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This work is principally performed in an office environment. However, the employee may be required to travel for field work to complete site investigation and data gathering. The employee may be required to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions as needed to maintain project schedules.

    Language & Communication Skills : The employee must be fluent in the English language and able to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms. The employee may be required to make presentations at conferences and to clients, and the employee will be responsible for providing high quality written products to include presentations, reports, and proposals.

    Mathematical Skills : The employee must be able to perform basic math as needed to support data collection and project management (i.e., overseeing project logistics and providing accurate schedule and progress updates).

    Other Skills : The employee must have strong computer skills and be able to use common software needed for project management and product development (such as Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project, and Adobe Pro). Understanding and ability to use GIS software required.

    Hourly Rate : $45.00 - $55.00 per hour, depending on experience
