Public Health / Health Systems Science (Open Rank Faculty) Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM)

The Department of Medical Education at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso – Paul L. Foster School of Medicine is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time open rank faculty position in public health & health systems science. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary team of medical educators to develop and deliver a highly integrated clinical presentation-based medical curriculum. Our faculty also engage in research and service activities based on individual interests, credentials and experience.

El Paso’s location on the US-Mexico border provides unparalleled opportunities to teach, study and address binational health challenges, health disparities, and cross-cultural healthcare delivery models. The region offers a living laboratory for public health research with its diverse demographic profile, making it ideal for teaching and studying social determinants of health and health equity issues. Faculty can make tangible impacts through service and research addressing the needs of medically underserved populations in both urban and rural settings, and El Paso County’s predominantly Hispanic population presents distinctive opportunities for research in Hispanic health issues and culturally responsive healthcare delivery.

The Community:

El Paso is the 6th largest city in Texas, the 22nd largest city in the U.S., and consistently ranks as one of the safest large cities in the country with excellent schools and family amenities. The El Paso community enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year, and has numerous outdoor and cultural pursuits. The Franklin Mountains State Park, one of the largest U.S. urban parks, bisects the city and offers easy access to hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and camping within the city limits. El Paso is home to an international airport, Ft. Bliss, the Sun Bowl, Division I athletics, historic sites, museums, minor league baseball, pro soccer, Broadway series, symphony, and a classic film festival.

Position Description:

  • Participate in the collaborative development and delivery of the pre-clerkship medical school curriculum (years 1-2), with an emphasis on curricular elements related to the teaching and assessment of health systems science
  • Participate in course administration and instruction for the pre-clerkship phase of the medical school curriculum
  • Collaborate with faculty members in other disciplines to develop and deliver an integrated curriculum that blends basic science, clinical science, and health systems science
  • Employ a variety of teaching methods including case-based instruction, large- and small-group discussion, lecture, demonstration, simulation, and team-based learning
  • Provide formative and summative assessment of medical student performance
  • Provide individual support, feedback, and advice to medical students
  • Work closely with course and curriculum committees, fellow faculty, and key administrators to accomplish the educational program goals and objectives established by the School of Medicine
  • Engage in advancement of scientific knowledge through research and/or scholarship Provide clinical service (when applicable) to the extent necessary to adequately support the teaching programs of the department Contribute to the community through academically-related public service complementary to the institutional mission Serve the academic community through participation in institutional governance, such as committee work and other administrative duties Ensure compliance with HIPAA and billing regulations
  • Adhere to institutional policies and procedures
  • Demonstrate professionalism in accordance with the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine Declaration of Faculty Professional Responsibility
  • Promote and uphold the values-based culture of TTUHSC El Paso

Depending on individual goals and interests, and as negotiated with the Chair of the Department of Medical Education, the successful candidate may also have the opportunity to:

  • Serve as a ‘college mentor’ by providing one-on-one support, feedback, and advising to medical students assigned to one of the school’s academic learning communities (‘colleges’)
  • Co-facilitate discussion-based sessions in the ‘College Colloquium,’ a course devoted to topics such as medical ethics, controversies in medicine, evidence-based medicine, critical thinking, safety and quality improvement, communication, humanism, empathy, wellness, life-long learning, bias, leadership, and professionalism

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent degree in public health, health systems science, or a closely related discipline, or MD/DO or equivalent medical degree together with an MPH Expertise/experience in teaching multiple curricular domains of health systems science such as:
    • Healthcare structures and processes
    • Systems thinking and complexity science
    • Value-based care Quality improvement and patient safety
    • Population health and social determinants
    • Interprofessional teams and collaboration
    • Health informatics and technology
    • Leadership and change management
    • Evidence-based medicine and practice Health policy, economics and advocacy
    • Evidence of scholarship in the field of expertise
    • Texas Medical License or eligibility for Texas Medical License for physician candidates Board certification by a member board of the American
    • Board of Medical Specialties for physician candidates

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing and delivering an integrated medical curriculum
  • Experience with active learning methods, such as interactive large- and small-group formats, team-based learning, case-based learning, and problem-based learning
  • Experience with curriculum management software systems
  • Participation in national organizations or committees devoted to medical education
  • Experience in medical education scholarship
  • Experience in the development of grant proposals and the management of extramural funding
  • Emerging or established regional or national reputation for the rank of associate professor or higher

This position is salaried and fully funded. Salary, academic rank and tenure option are commensurate with experience. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
