Oakland Public Library (OPL) empowers all people to explore, connect, and grow. Through our eighteen (18) branches, over three hundred dedicated employees serve multiple communities located within the Cities of Oakland, Piedmont, and Emeryville.

The Community Relations Department manages Oakland Public Library’s brand and external communications. The team oversees the library’s public presence and ensures consistent, engaging messaging across a variety of channels. This includes creating and distributing official reports, newsletters, flyers, brochures, and other print and digital materials. The department also manages OPL’s website, social media platforms, and graphic design needs for the system. In addition, it handles media relations, community outreach, special events, and builds strong connections between the library and the community it serves.
Responsibilities
- Designing, developing, and maintaining OPL’s website using a content management system.
- Proofreading, editing, and updating web pages on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis; keeping the website up to date, identifying errors, and making changes in a timely manner.
- Consulting with other departments to develop the web page design and obtain accurate information.
- Ensuring that the website adheres to OPL’s brand guidelines and contains relevant content, including the style, language, and imagery.
- Communicating with the public in a friendly and useful way about what services, events, and resources the library has to offer.
Candidate profile

Minimum qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications may be acceptable :
Education :
AA degree in computer science or related field, including coursework in web programming and current web technology.
Experience :
One year of experience in communication arts, computer science, website development, and / or editing, or related field.
Desirable Qualifications
Proficiency in web design and development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, responsive design)Experience with content management systems (e.g., Drupal, WordPress, LibGuides, BiblioCommons)Familiarity with integrating library systems, databases, and authentication toolsExperience in library services and resources, and familiarity with community needsExperience with user testing and incorporating feedback to make improvementsApplication deadline
