Description

Under general supervision, receives prisoners to process, guard, escort, inspect, and search for unauthorized items in a 24/7 work environment operation.

Examples Of Duties

Makes thorough searches of prisoners for contraband articles. Processes prisoner monies into kiosk, and creates prisoner debit cards. Patrols assigned areas to ensure that prisoners do not escape or have access to unauthorized areas. Inspects prisoners processing area for safety and sanitary conditions. Prepares and maintains reports and logs. Screens visitors for unauthorized items. Oversees interviews between visitors and prisoners. Escorts prisoners to scheduled court appearances, and the hospital for treatments. Testifies in court on search procedures and behavior patterns of prisoners. Monitors and processes information for the video arraignments and digitized mugging system procedures. Delivers court records and documents to the courts or receiving agency.

Additional Duties

Receives detainees from arresting officers and thoroughly searches detainees prior to allowing them to enter Building 500. Enters detainee information into Jail Management System (JMS) or other computer database. Conducts Buccal swab (DNA collection) of detainees who are charged with a felony and do not have DNA on file. Assists with the processing of juvenile detainees. Washes/cleans detainee clothes. Collects detainee property, records property content, places property in property bag and tags the property. Places property in proper storage area. Logs all property in and out of property room. Livescans (fingerprint) and photographs (mugshot) detainees. Assigns detainees to a designated cell or bullpen. Conducts thirty (30) minute cell checks on all detainees by walking through the cellblock area and visually inspecting each detainee to ensure wellbeing. Conducts fifteen (15) minute cell checks on all high-risk detainees or conduct continuous observation if needed. Notifies medical staff and supervision for detainees who are ill, injured, or have pre-existing medical conditions. Feeds detainees at the designated mealtime, accounting for each detainee who receives or refuses a meal and notifies a supervisor of how many meals were served and refused for desk blotter documentation. Notifies supervision of detainee complaints. Documents and notifies supervision of alleged assaults of detainees by other detainees. Documents and notifies supervision when detainees damage City of Detroit property. Prepares detainees for video arraignment. Prepares detainees for conveyance to Wayne County Jail, or other facilities. Ensures that all detainee property is returned to detainees who are being turned over to agencies for outstanding charges in other jurisdictions. Ensures that all detainee property is returned to detainees upon release. Must adhere to the department's body worn camera (BWC) policy.

Minimum Qualifications

High School graduation or GED. Two (2) years of recent experience in security operations.

Qualifications (Preferred):

State of Michigan Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of correctional security techniques and practices. Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations and orders governing detention facilities. Knowledge of safety rules and regulations, including first aid. Skill in the use of a personal computer and related software, a two-way radio, and standard office equipment. Skill in the use of specialized equipment such as electronic security and monitoring equipment, restraining devices, breath analyzer and metal detectors. Ability to apply personal defense techniques. Ability to perform arithmetic computations. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to learn and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to enforce regulations. Ability to administer basic first aid. Ability to learn and understand behavior patterns of incarcerated persons.

Licenses, Certifications, And Other Special Requirements:

Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

Physical Demands

Work is performed primarily in indoor and outdoor environments (penal institution). Some work requires travel to other work sites with exposure to seasonal weather conditions. Must be able to perform major duties which involve frequent walking, standing and bending; and restraining prisoners or quelling disturbances.

Work Environment

Most work is performed within a penal institution environment. This position is in a 24/7 operation. A person holding this position is considered an essential worker and is subject to work mandatory overtime (i.e., double shifts) that may occur over a number of consecutive days.

Computerized Assessment: 70% Interview: Pass/Fail Evaluation of Training, Experience and Personal Qualifications (T.E.P.): 30% Total Computerized Assessment, Interview and Evaluation of T.E.P: 100% Domicile Credit: 15 Points Veteran Points: 0-15 Points
