Job Summary

A ship fitter is a skilled tradesperson who constructs and repairs the metal structures of ships and other marine vessels. They work with various metals, using tools and techniques like cutting, shaping, welding, and riveting, to assemble the ship's hull, decks, and other structural components.

Responsibilities and Duties

Fabrication and Assembly :

Ship fitters lay out, cut, and shape metal plates, frames, and bulkheads according to blueprints and specifications.

Welding and Riveting :

They weld or rivet these metal components together, ensuring proper alignment and structural integrity.

Blueprint Reading :

Ship fitters must be proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings and schematics to understand the design and construction requirements.

Material Handling :

They lift and position heavy metal parts, using hoists, jacks, and other tools, and secure them for welding or riveting.

Quality Control :

Ship fitters inspect their work to ensure it meets quality standards and make necessary adjustments or repairs.

Safety Compliance :

They adhere to safety regulations and procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Repair and Maintenance :

In addition to new construction, ship fitters also repair and maintain existing vessels, modifying structures and replacing damaged parts.

Working at Heights :

Ship fitters often work at significant heights, requiring them to be comfortable and safe in elevated positions.

Qualifications and Skills

Welding and Metalworking :

Ship fitters need strong skills in welding (including different techniques and positions) and metal fabrication.

Blueprint Reading :
