Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and highly skilled School Social Worker to join our student support services team. This position serves a special education caseload and provides targeted mental health, behavioral, and social-emotional support to students across a variety of settings.
The School Social Worker will support students receiving services 17 times per month for 2030 minutes per session , while also providing crisis intervention, wraparound support , and coordination with families, outside providers, and multidisciplinary teams. The ideal candidate will hold an LMSW or LLMSW , possess 310 certification , and maintain School Social Work Certification (limited or full).
Key Responsibilities Student Support & Case Management
Provide direct social work services to students on the special education caseload based on IEP service frequency and duration (typically 17 sessions per month, 2030 minutes each).
Deliver individual and small-group counseling focused on social-emotional learning, self-regulation, coping skills, and behavioral growth.
Conduct crisis counseling and intervention as needed for students experiencing emotional or behavioral distress.
Complete Suicide Risk Assessments and follow up with appropriate documentation, safety planning, and communication with parents, staff, and external providers.
Coordinate post-hospitalization support to ensure smooth transitions and continuity of care for returning students.
Develop, implement, and monitor Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) , Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) , Success Plans , and Safety / Staff Response Plans .
Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavior interventions for general education and special education students.
Collaboration & Team Participation
Participate in Parent Meetings , REEDs (Review of Existing Evaluation Data) , METs (Multidisciplinary Evaluation Teams) , and IEP meetings as an integral member of the special education team.
Work collaboratively with teachers, school counselors, psychologists, nurses, and administrators to promote student success and well-being.
Support paraeducators with behavioral intervention strategies and staff response procedures.
Collaborate with school nurses for Medical Plan coordination , medical trainings , and nurse / parent meetings related to student care.
Participate in wraparound planning and case coordination , ensuring communication among families, outside agencies, and school-based supports.
Crisis & Safety Response
Respond to behavioral crises for both general and special education students, providing de-escalation support and follow-up planning.
Create and implement Safety Plans for at-risk students and Staff Response Plans to ensure consistent crisis management across settings.
Serve as a liaison between the school and Child Protective Services (CPS) when mandated reporting or collaborative follow-up is required.
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services, assessments, and interventions in accordance with district, state, and federal regulations .
Ensure compliance with IDEA , Section 504 , and Michigan Department of Education requirements for school social work services.
Utilize data-driven methods to monitor progress and adjust interventions as necessary.
Qualifications
Required :
Masters degree in Social Work from an accredited program.
LMSW or LLMSW in the State of Michigan.
310 Certification (Required for School Social Work in Michigan).
Michigan School Social Work Certification (Limited or Full).
Strong knowledge of special education law , IEP processes , and behavioral intervention practices .
Demonstrated ability to conduct crisis assessments , behavioral interventions , and FBAs / BIPs .
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred :
Experience working with K12 students in both general and special education settings.
Training in trauma-informed care , restorative practices , PBIS , or CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention).
Knowledge of community mental health and social service systems in Michigan.
Working Conditions
School-year position, typically MondayFriday , following the academic calendar.
Travel may be required between assigned school buildings.
