Position Title : Design Technician
Location : Sterling, VA
Position Status : 6-Month Contract-to-Hire
Pay Rate : $24-$26 per hour (based on experience)
Position Overview
We're looking for a motivated Design Technician to join our engineering team in Sterling, VA. This entry-level opportunity is ideal for someone with strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and a desire to grow in the utility or power distribution field. You'll work closely with experienced engineers and designers to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective electrical infrastructure for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
This role offers hands-on training, mentorship, and exposure to industry-standard design tools and field operations - a great steppingstone for anyone pursuing a career in electrical or civil design, GIS / CAD, or utility engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Support engineering staff in designing and preparing job packages, including drawings, material lists, and labor estimates.
- Apply company, client, and regulatory standards to ensure safe and compliant designs.
- Participate in field visits to verify site conditions and interact with construction crews.
- Utilize design software and work management tools to develop and track project deliverables.
- Learn to evaluate electrical loads and recommend appropriate transformers, fusing, and protection.
- Maintain organized project documentation and provide regular progress updates.
- Collaborate with mentors, engineers, and other departments to meet project milestones.
- Uphold all safety procedures and company policies at all times.
- Perform additional duties and training as assigned to support career development.
Qualifications
Education
Required : High school diploma or GEDPreferred : Associate's degree or higher in a related technical discipline (Engineering, Drafting, GIS, Electrical Technology)Preferred : Bachelor's degree in science, math, or business-related fieldExperience
0-1 year of experience in power distribution, GIS / CAD, or utility design / constructionExposure to drafting, field verification, or electrical design tools a plusSkills & Abilities
Strong communication and problem-solving skillsBasic understanding of algebra, geometry, and spreadsheet calculationsAbility to read and interpret technical documentation and mapsProficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS, or similar software preferredExcellent organization, time management, and multitasking skillsValid driver's license and reliable transportationWillingness to participate in storm response or after-hours work when requiredWork Environment & Physical Requirements
