About the Role :
Legal Aid of Nebraska is seeking a Managing Attorney to lead our North Platte office. This role is ideal for an attorney who is passionate about advancing justice, mentoring others, and building relationships that make a lasting impact in rural Nebraska.
The Managing Attorney works closely with the Executive Director and leadership team to guide the local office’s operations, support staff development, and ensure Legal Aid maintains strong relationships with the local bench, bar, community partners, and client community. In addition to leadership responsibilities, this position includes direct client representation and advocacy on behalf of low-income Nebraskans.
Key Responsibilities :
Client Representation & Advocacy
- Provide high-quality legal representation to clients.
- Conduct litigation at the administrative, trial, and appellate levels.
- Advocate on behalf of Nebraska’s low-income population on issues aligned with Legal Aid’s priorities.
Leadership & Office Management
Foster a positive, collaborative, and mission-driven team culture.Partner with leadership, unit directors, and managers to support and motivate staff.Provide input for staff evaluations and professional development.Ensure effective coordination of casework, outreach, and community engagement activities.Keep leadership informed about local developments and community needs.Community Engagement & External Relations
Build and maintain relationships with the local bar, bench, and community organizations.Represent Legal Aid in community events and outreach activities.Promote Legal Aid’s services and refer clients to appropriate resources.Support recruitment of private attorneys for pro bono efforts.Development & Communications
Identify and assist with grant and funding opportunities.Contribute to grant proposals and reports.Collaborate with communications staff on media and outreach opportunities.Administrative & Other Duties
Oversee daily office operations and maintenance.Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and Legal Aid policies.Utilize firm technology systems (Microsoft Office, PIKA, Paylocity, etc.).Conduct legal research and stay current on developments in relevant practice areas.Perform other duties as assigned to support Legal Aid’s mission.Qualifications :
Required Education & Licensure
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.Licensed to practice law in Nebraska and member in good standing with the Nebraska State Bar (or eligible for admission).Required Skills & Attributes
Strong commitment to Legal Aid’s mission and to serving low-income Nebraskans.Ability to manage and mentor staff while handling a full caseload.Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.Awareness of and sensitivity to the legal needs of low-income communities.Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, partners, and clients.Preferred Qualifications
Experience in poverty law, public interest law, or nonprofit legal services.Bilingual or multilingual skills (especially Spanish or other languages spoken by clients).Why Join Us in North Platte?
