Job Description

Under general administrative direction, the Principal Engineer / Architect manages, plans, assigns and directs the activities of several units or a group of professional and sub-professional engineering / architectural personnel engaged in a wide variety of design and / or construction projects.

Essential functions may include :

  • Plan, direct and coordinate the design activities of major sections engaged in complex engineering and / or architectural projects.
  • Establish, prepare, manage, review and monitor organizational budgets.
  • Establish and evaluate organizational goals; coordinate activities of professional personnel with contractors, subcontractors, state and local agencies, and inspection and construction personnel.
  • Supervise personnel, complete performance appraisals, and participate in disciplinary processes when necessary.
  • Establish design and construction standards; review and approve correspondence, reports, estimates and other materials.
  • Write policies, procedures, and evaluations.
  • Conduct negotiations with government and architectural and engineering agencies.
  • Coordinate, interpret and enforce policies; confer with operating division managers and other departments.
  • Make presentations to boards, organizations and the public.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Nine (9) years verifiable professional engineering work experience, of which six (6) years must be as a licensed professional engineer. Two (2) of the nine (9) years must be equivalent to the City and County of San Francisco class 5211 Senior Engineer; and
  • Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California.
  • Substitutions for Engineer Specialty :

  • A Master's Degree in Engineering may substitute for 1 year of work experience.
  • A PhD in Engineering may substitute for 2 years of work experience.
  • Notes for Engineer Specialty :

  • Some positions may require a certificate issued by ICBO / ICC or equivalent.
  • Some positions may require additional special licensing or experience in related areas; details determined later.
  • Out-of-State Applicants : Candidates licensed in other states may apply and will be placed under waiver until California licensure is provided.

    Licenses and Working Conditions

    Some positions may require a valid driver license. Working conditions may include lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in high places and outdoors, and varying schedules including weekends, holidays, nights, and overtime.

    Verification and Selection

    Applicants may be required to verify education and experience. Falsifying information may result in disqualification. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of a City and County of San Francisco application. The selection process includes a Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire, and a scoring process to generate an eligible list for certification. The eligible list typically remains valid for 6 months and may be extended.
