Guilford Technical Community College ( GTCC ) is currently the fourth largest of N.C. Community College System’s 58 institutions. The purpose of the Limited Entry Programs Career Coach / Advisor is to provide guidance to students intending to apply to a Limited Entry Program at GTCC . The coach / advisor is a front-line resource, assisting students in identifying appropriate career options, providing advising and referrals to college services and preparing them for admission to the corresponding program of study. The selected individual will serve as a primary point of contact for students throughout the pre- and post- admission process. They will plan, direct, and implement pre- and post- admission initiatives designed to improve GTCC student retention and success in Limited Entry programs. Further, they will maintain current knowledge of Limited Entry academic programs and review and analyze student retention and success data as a measure of their impact. The position works in a team environment and collaborates with units throughout the college to provide comprehensive services to Limited Entry students. They perform work with considerable independence and assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Duties / Functions

Student Career Coaching / Advising

  • Engage in individual advising appointments, walk-in advising appointments, group advising sessions, and phone / electronic communication with current and prospective limited entry program students to assess students’ progress in pre-health related coursework.
  • Administer and interpret career interest / ability instruments, test scores and other information to assist students in making informed choices regarding admission to programs.
  • Provide information on health professions and other careers that require limited entry admission, associated college programs, admission requirements, and the application process.
  • Develop and facilitate Limited Entry Programs Orientations and other information sessions promoting student success, development, and retention.
  • Participate in recruiting efforts specific to Limited Entry programs.
  • Coach students to find appropriate solutions to academic / non-academic issues pre-admission.
  • Conduct proactive outreach and monitor assigned students’ progress toward completing their educational goals.

Process Management

  • Document results of each advising appointment to maintain a centralized and accurate record of student progress toward application to program of study, while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Work with a variety of technology tools (i.e., student databases, appointment scheduler, degree audit / planner, retention software etc.) and able to use these tools effectively to assist students.
  • College engagement

  • Participate in college-wide, division, and department events.
  • Support programs that promote student retention and graduation.
  • Provide training and workshops for faculty and staff as needed.
  • Participate on college committees and task forces as required.
  • Work with faculty and staff to develop student-focused processes.
  • Data Collection and Analysis.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of every student interaction including in-person visits, phone, and online consultations.
  • Record attendance and individualized comments for each student after each session.
  • Document the success and retention of limited entry students after admission.
  • Supervision

  • Hire, train, and supervise work-study students as needed.

  • Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related, science or higher education field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Education Preferred

  • Master’s degree in a health-related, science or higher education field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Academic coaching certification.
  • Experience Required

  • 3 years of experience providing support services to postsecondary students which can include one of more of the following : recruitment / admissions, academic and / or career coaching, and / or case management.
  • Experience using technology including Microsoft Office suite, a relational student information system, e.g. Colleague, Banner, student retention software e.g., Navigate, Starfish etc.
  • Experience with higher education legal requirements particularly related to FERPA .
  • Experience developing and conducting individual and group orientation sessions for students.
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and acting upon student data.
  • Experience Preferred

  • Greater than 3 years of experience providing support services to post-secondary students to which can include one of more of the following : recruitment / admissions, academic and / or career coaching, and / or case management.
  • Experience at a community college
  • KSA Required

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written) including effective listening behaviors.
  • Strong critical thinking ability and customer service approach.
  • Ability to work in a team environment collaboratively and to build effective working relationships.
  • Excellent time management and problem-solving techniques and use of professional judgment in a complex team environment.
  • Value diversity and understand multicultural and cultural competencies.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and families and other constituents from different backgrounds and cultures.
  • KSA Preferred

  • Knowledge of healthcare careers
  • Knowledge of pre-health professions programs and course requirements, including prerequisites.
  • Department / Job Specific Requirements

  • Work may require travel to multiple campuses.
