The Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University seeks to recruit a surgeon to lead pediatric heart and lung transplantation and to assume the role of founding Director of Pediatric Thoracic Transplantation as an Assistant Professor, Clinical Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Professor, or Clinical Professor in the University Tenure Line (UTL), University Medical Line (UML) and Clinician Educator Line (CE).

The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching.

The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the University Medical Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.

The major criterion for appointment as Clinician Educators is excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, teaching, administrative and / or scholarship appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.

Depending on upon credentials and experience, the applicant will be appointed to an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor level appointment in the Stanford School of Medicine, in the UTL, UML or CE line.

The ideal candidate should have an MD or MD / PhD, be board certified / board eligible in cardiothoracic surgery and board eligible / board certified in congenital surgery and have medical licensure in California by the starting date. This individual will work closely, in a leadership role, with the medical director of heart transplantation and the medical director of lung transplantation, including management of the clinical services, organization of programs, and management of regulatory responsibilities. The clinical role will be dedicated to managing all surgical aspects of pediatric heart, lung, and heart-lung transplantation, and all surgical aspects of mechanical circulatory support, including ventricular assist, artificial heart and ECMO. The director will also work closely with medical director of the hospital wide ECMO program.

The Director will be a fully integrated member of the Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and will represent the Transplant program within these structures. Based on the Director’s vision, resources such as dedicated junior faculty, surgical fellows, and advanced practice providers will be made available to support the programs. There will not be a pathway to a future role of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Division Chief nor Executive Director of the Children’s Heart Center. There will be no obligatory responsibilities related to pediatric cardiac surgical care other than that described above.

Approximately 50% of the Director’s time will be dedicated to clinical service, and 50% to research and scholarship related to the transplantation and mechanical circulatory support in pediatric patients.

The candidate will be expected to develop a research program in transplantation and mechanical circulatory support in pediatric patients and collaborate with established laboratories within the Pediatric Heart Center, including the BASE research team. The Director will also have access to the resources of, and will collaborate with, the Pediatric Heart Center Clinical Outcomes Center.

The Director will represent the transplant program on all Pediatric Heart Center committees and will work closely with Pediatric Heart Center leadership. The Director will have membership seats on the Pediatric Heart Center Executive, Strategy, Quality, and Operations Committees.

Applications will be reviewed beginning February / March 2024 and accepted until the position is filled.
