Job description

Dean of Students

The Dean of Students will play a pivotal role in creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for students. The Dean of Students will oversee student affairs, discipline, and welfare programs, ensuring the overall well-being and success of the student body. This position requires exceptional leadership skills, a passion for education, and a commitment to fostering positive relationships among students, teachers, and parents.

Reports To : Principal

Classification : Full-Time (Certified)

FLSA Status : Non-Exempt

Work Term : 202 Days

Full-Time Salary Range : MCBOE Salary Schedule

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree and at least three years of successful teaching or administrative experience in a K-12 setting
  • Current teacher and / or administrator certification by the Alabama State Department of Education by the start date
  • Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start date

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Develop and implement programs to support students' academic, social, and emotional well-being
  • Provide guidance and counseling to students on academic and personal matters, including career development
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and external resources to address individual student needs and challenges
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress, intervening when necessary to ensure student success
  • Establish and enforce a fair and consistent disciplinary code that aligns with school policies and regulations
  • Investigate and address disciplinary incidents, ensuring due process and maintaining accurate records
  • Implement proactive strategies to prevent disruptive behavior and foster a positive school culture
  • Train staff on effective behavior management techniques and provide ongoing support
  • Monitor student attendance records, identifying patterns of absenteeism and implementing appropriate interventions
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and community agencies to support students with unique circumstances or challenges
  • Coordinate resources and services for students with special needs, ensuring compliance with legal requirements
  • Respond promptly to student emergencies, including medical situations or crisis intervention
  • Foster a positive and inclusive school climate that values diversity, equity, and respect
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop initiatives that promote student engagement and positive relationships
  • Organize and lead activities that encourage student involvement, such as clubs, assemblies, and extracurricular events
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians, providing updates on student progress, behavior, and school initiatives
  • Stay current with educational trends, research, and best practices related to student support and behavior management
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal
  • Required Skills and Competencies :

  • Ability to follow both oral and written directions and instructions. Ability to communicate clearly, orally, and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively present information to others and respond to students, parents, and staff. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student matters. Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities. Ability to be professional in appearance, attitude, and demeanor. Ability to be punctual and comply with a precise work schedule.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Knowledge of child development, and especially of the characteristics of students in the age group assigned. Knowledge of the prescribed curriculum. Knowledge of current educational research. Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology.
  • Physical Requirements :

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee must also talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use their hands to finger, handle, feel, and / or reach. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
