- Located at Eden Prairie Fire Station 1 (14800 Scenic Heights Road Eden Prairie, MN 55344) Travels to inspection sites.
- Typical hours are 7 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m. Four 10-hour shifts a week. Hours may vary based on business need, including evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities
The Fire Prevention Specialist / Fire Inspector is responsible for enforcing the fire code, City ordinances, and performing Fire Prevention duties. This position is primarily responsible for the following areas of impact :
Provides fire and life safety inspections for special events within the city limits. Interprets codes and makes decisions in the field allowing for the best possible working environment. Inspects new and existing buildings, businesses, and rental housing. Inspects sprinkler systems, new Fire alarm systems, and special Fire Suppression systems. Handles concerns from public on fire hazards, inspects licensed Daycare centers both commercial and residential, assists the State Fire Marshal's Office with school inspection, and inspects commercial kitchen exhaust cleanings.Provides fire prevention education for school age children, safety camps, scout troops, seniors, juvenile fire setters, and business staff.Responds to fire emergencies and investigates cause and origin. Participates in On-call Inspector coverage. Responds to emergency calls.Effectively conducts all responsibilities of an Eden Prairie Firefighter. Must adhere to all department requirements, including, but not limited to, a valid Minnesota driver's license.While these areas are the primary focus of this position, we believe strongly in teamwork and employees will be called upon to perform a variety of duties as a part of their role with the City.
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) is required.An associate's degree in a related field is preferred.State of Minnesota Firefighter I and II certification is required.Certified Minnesota State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is required.Certified Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO) is required within one year in position.Blue Card required to start within two years and completed after three years in position.State Certified Officer I and Instructor I are required within four years in position.Fire Inspector I and Fire Investigator I and II (with certification) are preferred and are required to be completed within the first three years of start date in position as long as course is available.A minimum of three years of related work experience is required within the Eden Prairie Fire Department (EPFD) or a fire department of a similar size.Eden Prairie Firefighter experience is preferred.Experience with record management systems preferred.Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.Must maintain a valid driver's license (must have excellent driving record).As part of the Eden Prairie Fire Department, this position is required to serve as a firefighter in addition to the position detail requirements.Work involves frequent calls to emergency situations. There is regular exposure to very disagreeable working conditions such as fumes, fire, smoke, extreme weather conditions including ice, snow, extreme high and low temperatures, humidity, rain, dirt, mud. The work involves exposure to hazardous conditions such as toxic chemicals, slippery conditions, working in traffic areas and adverse road conditions. While at emergency scenes, there may have exposure to injury, trauma, blood-borne pathogens, traffic accidents, and visual and emotional trauma. The Fire Prevention Specialist is required to take appropriate safety precautions and wear protective equipment and must be able to stand, climb ladders, balance, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl and reach, to walk or run on uneven surfaces, and to drag up to 185 pounds for a distance of 50 feet. There is hearing / listening, seeing / observing, communication, grasping and occasional lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 100 pounds, frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 50 pounds and regular moving of objects up to 20 pounds. Moderate attention to detail and deadlines is required in completing reports and paperwork. All Fire Prevention Specialists work a rotating on-call schedule, in which sleep can be disrupted.Candidates must successfully complete and pass the City's evaluation of the pre-employment process prior to their first day of employment. Pre-employment processes for this position include professional reference checks, background check, pre-employment physical exam, driver's license check (must have a valid driver's license and excellent driving record), work history verification, education verification, and psychological evaluation.Skills
