Virginia Certified Police Officers - will participate in a 8 week academy training program.Certified Police Officers outside Virginia, within the United States - will participate in a 8 week academy training program. The academy will provide necessary training in legal, firearms, and driving and defensive tactics.Virginia In-State Jailor / Sheriff Deputy - will participate in a 25-26 week academy training program to successfully complete the Virginia state certified police officer training at the Norfolk Police Academy. The academy will provide necessary training in classroom, physical fitness, and police situation simulation.Essential functions include, but are not limited to :
Enforce state and local laws.Performs patrol duties and responds to calls for service.Performs a variety of duties and tasks related to the protection of life, property, and the preservation of the constitutional rights of every citizen.Conducts criminal and traffic investigations, field interviews, serves warrants, subpoenas and other court papers.Issues summons and makes arrests, watches for criminal, suspicious, or hazardous situations and takes appropriate policy action as necessary.Provides assistance and information to the public and assists in the prosecution of offenders. Maintains administrative requirements and provides public information.Must be able to perform the physical aspects and meet the requirements and tests prescribed by the City's Civil Service Commission.Must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Education / Experience :
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Virginia Certified Police Officers :
Graduation from a DCJS approved Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy.DCJS certification.One (1) year of consecutive active service as a certified patrol officer for a municipal, county, and / or state law enforcement agency.Must be currently employed as a certified patrol officer, or separated no more than twelve (12) months.Certified Police Officers outside Virginia, within the United States :
Graduation from a DCJS approved Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy.DCJS certification.Three (3) years of consecutive active service as a certified patrol officer for a municipal, county, and / or state law enforcement agency.Must be currently employed as a certified patrol officer, or separated no more than twenty-four (24) months.Virginia In-State Jailor / Sheriff Deputy :
Graduation from a DCJS approved basic Jailor Academy.Jailor certification.One (1) year of consecutive active service as a Jailor / Deputy Sheriff for a municipal, county, and / or state law enforcement agency within Virginia.Other Requirements :

Overview of Process :
Physical Agility Test - events designed to simulate typical work-related situations, that require the ability to perform specific physical activities.Psychological Examination - using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Test (MMPI), used to assess personality traits and psychopathology.Personal History Booklet - used to gather information of your personal history.Background Investigation - involves obtaining and verifying information related to prior employment, drug usage, personal and professional references and criminal records, DMV records and credit records.Polygraph Examination - used to verify the background data disclosed in the Personal History Booklet and employment application.Medical Examination - includes medical physical and drug screen.Selected candidates will be required to sign an acknowledgement indicating that they will refrain from using tobacco products, both on and off-duty.
This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus. The signing bonus will be paid upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.
