Position Summary :
The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is responsible for providing high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and medication management to patients admitted to the inpatient psychiatric unit. The PMHNP collaborates closely with the attending psychiatrist, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary treatment team to ensure comprehensive, patient-centered care. This position includes on-call responsibilities during nighttime hours for emergent orders and updates as communicated by nursing staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Clinical Assessment and Treatment
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and mental status examinations upon admission and as clinically indicated.
- Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the supervising psychiatrist and multidisciplinary team.
- Prescribe, adjust, and manage psychotropic and adjunctive medications within the PMHNP scope of practice and facility protocols.
- Evaluate treatment response and modify interventions based on clinical presentation, laboratory findings, and collateral reports.
- Document all encounters, treatment plans, and updates in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in compliance with facility, state, and federal standards.
- Perform suicide risk assessments, behavioral observations, and crisis evaluations as needed.
- Facilitate medication education for patients and families, ensuring understanding of medication purpose, potential side effects, and adherence importance.
Collaboration and Coordination
Report directly to and maintain regular communication with the supervising psychiatrist regarding complex cases, medication changes, and treatment progression.Collaborate with nursing, social work, therapy, and case management teams to ensure continuity of care and safe discharge planning.Participate in daily or weekly treatment team meetings, clinical rounds, and case reviews as scheduled.Provide clinical guidance and consultation to nursing staff regarding behavioral management, de-escalation techniques, and emergency psychiatric interventions.On-Call Responsibilities
Remain available during designated on-call hours (typically overnight) to provide clinical decisions and verbal / telephone orders as needed by nursing staff.Respond promptly to calls regarding urgent medication needs, behavioral escalations, or significant changes in patient condition.Coordinate with the supervising psychiatrist for urgent cases requiring physician-level intervention or transfer of care.Document all on-call interactions and orders per policy within the required timeframe.Regulatory and Documentation Compliance
Ensure documentation meets Joint Commission, CMS, and state regulatory standards for inpatient psychiatric care.Maintain up-to-date credentialing, licensing, and DEA registration.Adhere to facility policies, including medication reconciliation, seclusion / restraint protocol, and emergency medical response.Participate in quality assurance, performance improvement, and peer review activities.Education and Leadership
Provide education to staff regarding psychopharmacology, symptom management, and mental health conditions.Serve as a clinical role model promoting trauma-informed and recovery-oriented care.Contribute to staff development, orientation, and ongoing competency evaluations as requested by leadership.Qualifications :
Education and Licensure
Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited PMHNP program.Active and unrestricted Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license.Active Michigan Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license with Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification (PMHNP-BC).Current DEA registration with authority to prescribe controlled substances.Experience
Minimum of 1–2 years of psychiatric experience preferred, preferably in an inpatient or acute care setting.Demonstrated proficiency in clinical decision-making, crisis intervention, and psychopharmacologic management.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong understanding of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, psychopharmacology, and evidence-based psychiatric practice.Excellent communication and documentation skills.Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.Skilled in managing acute psychiatric presentations and high-acuity patient populations.Competence in EHR systems and electronic prescribing.
