Job description

Part-Time Temporary Investigator

Under the direct supervision of the Metal Theft Sergeant, the investigator is responsible for enforcing regulations concerning metal recycling entities, conducting criminal investigations, and filing charges when needed. He / she shall conduct interviews with complainants, witnesses, and suspects to obtain relevant facts and present them to the District Attorney's Office for charges.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Case management
  • Interview witnesses and interrogate suspects
  • Conducts surveillance
  • Conducts thorough investigations, subpoenas records, and any other items needed for case presentation to the ADA
  • Conduct interviews with complainants, victims, witnesses, and suspects to obtain relevant facts
  • Conduct follow-up investigations
  • Prepares detailed reports
  • Execute both arrest and search warrants, conduct surveillance, and assist local, state, and federal partners in conducting criminal investigations
  • File charges and testify in court
  • Assists other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in conducting criminal investigations.
  • Performs other assignments and duties as required and / or necessary

Minimum Requirements :

This is a part-time temporary position.

This position may end at any time based on the needs of the department.

  • Must be an Honorably Retired Peace Officer
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in law enforcement
  • A minimum of (2) years prior patrol and / or criminal investigative experience with any law enforcement agency.
  • Must have an active TCOLE Peace Officer License
  • Willing to accept, attend, and successfully complete additional training as required
  • Must present a professional image
  • Knowledge of :

  • Texas Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure, specifically Chapter 31
  • Arrest procedures
  • Harris County Metal Theft Regulations
  • Superion, JWEB, CJIS, CAD, DIMS, and JOTS computer systems
  • Skilled in :

  • Proficient in the use of standard office software programs such as MS Word and Outlook
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proficient in report writing and communication skills
  • Ability to :

  • Effectively manage a caseload
  • Prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment to meet strict deadlines
  • Work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Work varying duty hours as may be needed
  • Work with outside law enforcement agencies and HCDAO
  • Preferences :

  • Previous criminal investigative experience

  • A minimum of 20 hours per week with a maximum of 30 hours per week
