Project Engineer – Hydro Modernization

Position Summary

The Project Engineer acts as the engineering manager for design activities for the Hydro Modernization program. Projects include modernization and maintenance (retrofits) in the Georgia Power (GPC) and Alabama Power (APC) Hydro river systems. This role is responsible for managing the engineering scope, engineering budgets, engineering schedules, and serves as the main point of contact for engineering deliverables to the project manager.

The Project Engineer also works with design disciplines to ensure adequate and qualified resources are assigned to the project, anticipating changes in project scope, budget, and schedule requirements, and developing / communicating mitigation plans for those changes. They also identify and communicate lessons learned and facilitate resolving engineering and vendor related issues. This position is also required to maintain accurate project records in a variety of project management applications.

Travel

  • Up to 50% travel should be expected within the SouthernCompany footprint
  • Travel frequency will be dictated by the specific project(s) supported

Relocation

  • Some relocation assistance may be available for this position if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Atlanta or Birmingham area
  • Position Qualifications

    Education / Certification

  • B.S. in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus
  • Technical & Leadership Experience

  • 5+ years' experience in one of the following areas :
  • Design or project management as related to engineering, procurement, construction, and startup for heavy industrial projects, or electric utility generation and / or transmission systems

  • Formal or informal experience in a lead type role (i.e. directing activities of direct reports or project team members)
  • Experience working in (or in direct support of) at least one of the following areas is required :
  • Power plant operations or prior assignments within a power plant

  • Plant facility operations (Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Oil & Gas, etc.)
  • Distribution or transmission or prior assignments within these areas
  • Experience in Hydro plants or projects is preferred
  • Budget / schedule management
  • Understanding of project change control
  • Strong risk mitigation and analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, and determine viable solutions
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction processes.
  • Must possess strong management and organization skills.
  • Ability to build a strong, diverse team.
  • The incumbent must possess the skills to balance customer satisfaction priorities with those deriving from project restraints.
  • Ability to work successfully and build relationships across operating companies.
