Job Overview

Nova Space Solutions (NSS) is seeking a Civil Structural Engineer to join our Engineering Services Department team primarily at NASA Michoud Assembly Facility Louisiana and NASA John C. Stennis Space Center Mississippi as needed. The candidate will assist in the planning design analysis and support construction oversight of new and/or existing sites and facilities modifications. The employee is expected to independently plan and accomplish complete projects of broad scope and complexity requiring creativity and decision making. This position works under the direction of the lead civil-structural engineer alongside other civil and structural engineers as well as multi-discipline stakeholders to accomplish work.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions & Duties

  • Assists in the development of civil/structural designs for construction of new or modification to existing facilities.
  • Develops design proposals including design cost and schedule for customer approval.
  • Monitors and reports on the status of all current design projects.
  • Develops structural analysis models finite element analyses and other numerical simulations as required for the design of facility systems. Systems include but are not limited to piping (support systems) roads/parking lots storm drainage horizontal and vertical structures High Pressure Industrial Water (HPIW) Sewer foundations and ground improvement.
  • Prepares plans and specifications (specsintact a plus) for construction packages using design software and in conjunction with other project team members.
  • Familiarity with developing estimated cost of construction for completed designs.
  • Assists in the review of vendor/contractor submittals and Requests for Information (RFIs) to bring product design from engineering phase to completed construction.
  • Reads and creates civil/structural fabrication drawings and possess a working knowledge and understanding of the fundamental components and materials used in the construction of these systems.
  • Should have a working knowledge of fabrication welding and examination methods used in the construction and repair of structural steel.
  • Performing engineering analyses required by the governing (ACI ASCE AISC and IBC Code(s) and have experience utilizing computer modeling techniques and software(s) available in the industry for such purpose.

  • Ability to multitask on a variety of projects balance workload and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously and be highly organized.
  • Must be able to work independently and exercise discretion competently with little direct supervision and carry out expectations of role with proficiency.
  • Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to effectively communicate and influence change at various levels in the organization.
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to constant work transitions.
  • Ability to demonstrate a cooperative and collaborative work style and a team-oriented perspective.
  • Contribute to the development implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures.

Job Requirements

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering from an ABET accredited university or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with ASCE ANSI/AISC ACI IBC AASHTO and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Familiar with software such as RISA STAAD EnerCalc Hilti Profis ANSYS MathCAD AutoCad Revit Civil3D.
  • Experience working with civil/structural design principles and practices.
  • Must be able to provide a certified Birth Certificate (with state seal) Passport or INS Citizenship documents on date of hire (candidate will be sent home if this paperwork is not provided upon arrival on date of hire).
  • Must have the ability to communicate the English language both verbally and written in an effective manner.
  • Must have and maintain a valid drivers license.
  • Must be able to pass a Pre-employment background check and drug screen test.
  • Occasional travel and project support at Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) Louisiana.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to obtain required NASA badge.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Internet and E-mail.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience of government facilities.
  • Four (4) years of related experience preferred.
  • Internship experience a plus.
  • Prior experience of government facilities.
  • Engineer Intern (EI) designation upon completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or ability to obtain within one year.

Working Conditions:

  • Occasional travel and project support at Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) Louisiana.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical effort involving standing sitting walking or detail work.
  • Occasional risk of injury due to hazards.
