The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology - known as CALIT2 - is one of four Gray Davis Institutes for Science and Innovation located on University of California campuses. The founding objective of CALIT2 was to create a world-class multidisciplinary research institute to promote discovery and innovation, notably to harness the ubiquity and scale of the internet and wireless technologies to accelerate growth in many different scientific areas and industries that are undergoing a massive transformation. Over two decades, CALIT2 has focused on inter-transdisciplinary research, as well as the creation of new, advanced scientific facilities, and centers and 'living laboratories' to attract and support the nearly 250 UCI faculty who have opted to affiliate with the institute. It also offers programs for workforce development, training and outreach, as well as commercialization paths (e.g. through Techportal) and interfaces with the industry. CalIT2 brings together faculty and students from different schools at UCI, collaborates with other CaliT2 institutes (at UCSD and UCR) and with other California Institutes for Science and Innovation in the University of California.

Your Role on the Team

This position requires the experience and knowledge of a seasoned research administrator to independently process and / or oversee proposals and awards and / or transactions related to contract and grant management and maintains contract and grant records in compliance with institutional research sponsor policies. Provides quality high-level assistance to faculty, researchers, and other academic personnel affiliated with CalIT2 to obtain (Pre-Award) and manage (Post-Award) sponsored awards that support research, training, outreach and other institute activities. Works with other research units for complex, collaborative proposals and awards. We are seeking an experienced individual that can support and enable CalIT2's contracts & grants activities growth in number and complexity.

Pre-Award responsibilities include submission of contract and grant (C&G) proposals from all prospective sponsors including but not limited to the Federal Government, Private Foundations, and For-Profit Entities. Requirements include preparation of complex proposal budgets and support documents while assisting investigators with adherence to submission guidelines by using acquired knowledge to interpret policy and comply with proposal guidelines.

Post-Award responsibilities include monitoring and reporting on funds received from outside sponsors and internal UCI sources, and provides general guidance on the proper stewardship of those funds. Requires knowledge of University and agency guidelines and policies governing spending funds, allocating costs, complying with generally accepted cost principles and preparation of cost transfers to properly allocate costs. Also requires knowledge of and ability to prepare closeout documents, cost-sharing reports, and effort reporting documents.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required :

  • Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.
  • Ability to manage significant volume and complex timing of transactions.
  • Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports.
  • Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective grant funding processes, procedures and techniques
  • Strong writing skills in a variety of styles to draft persuasive text for a variety of audiences while ensuring adherence to funding sponsor guidelines.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 3-5 years of related experience

  • Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.

    The expected pay range for this recruitment is $$71,600- $$96,500 (Annual).
