The Air Force JAG Corps - Military Attorney
This career offers immediate, meaningful work and the chance to practice in diverse legal fields while traveling worldwide.
Qualifications
Service Commitment
You do not incur a service commitment until you accept your JAG assignment. The initial active-duty commitment is four years, beginning on the day you depart for Officer Training School (OTS).
Prior Military Service
If you are selected for direct appointment and have prior active duty, National Guard, or Reserve service, you will be credited by length of service for pay purposes. Prior commissioned service may also advance entry grade and date of rank. All active-duty service is credited toward retirement.
Application Process
Selection boards occur in February, April, August, and November. Applications are accepted online. Submit all materials by the 10th of the preceding month (January 10, March 10, July 10, October 10). After submission, a Staff Judge Advocate (SJA) at an Air Force Base (AFB) will contact you to schedule a hiring interview. The interview must be completed on or before the 1st of the board month (February 1, April 1, August 1, November 1).
The SJA will forward a report, along with your application, to HQ USAF / JAX. Do not mail materials directly to HQ USAF / JAX. If you need to add materials after submission, contact the SJA who conducted your interview. Additional materials will not be accepted after the board month begins.
Recommendation Letters
Letters should attest to work ethic, duty performance, and leadership potential. Address all letters to "Selection Board Members." Do not mail directly to the board; upload them as part of your online application.
