Job Title : Histology Technician Profession : Histology Technician Specialty : Histology Technician Duration : 16 Weeks Shift : Day Shift Hours per Shift : 8 Hours Experience : Minimum of 1 Year License : Registry certification or eligible at technician level preferred Certifications : Continuing education credits required annually Description : Performs standard and specialized laboratory procedures in preparation of tissue, biological materials, and body fluids for microscopic examination by pathologists. Formal education required includes a high school diploma with 2 years of work experience in a laboratory setting or an Associate of Science degree with 1 year of work experience in a histology laboratory setting. Registry certification or eligibility at the technician level is preferred. One year of previous experience as a Histology Technologist is preferred. A minimum of 12 continuing education credits are required to be completed each calendar year for continued employment. Ability to read, comprehend, and follow detailed laboratory procedures and instructions. Manual dexterity sufficient to perform delicate precise dissection procedures, operate cutting instrumentation, fixing and staining equipment, mix and prepare stains and solutions, and perform preventive and daily maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation. Skill in the use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by the department. Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients / customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity. Physical demands include exerting 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and / or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and / or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects. Essential functions include picking up and / or receiving tissue, biological material, and body fluids. Assists in research procedures, labels, and places specimens in appropriate containers for processing using proper dehydrating, fixing, infiltrating, and paraffin solutions. Embeds prepared and fixed specimens into paraffin blocks and uses a microtome to cut tissue sections to specified thickness. Removes excess paraffin, mounts tissue sections onto glass slides, and stains them (routine / special). Prepares stains and solutions following specific procedures as listed in the appropriate procedure manual. Follows established laboratory safety policies and procedures. Maintains laboratory equipment and ensures adequate inventory of laboratory supplies. Maintains appropriate records, slide files, and tissue blocks as outlined in the procedure manual. Answers incoming phone calls and requests for technical information, providing limited factual information or referring to a supervisor or pathologist as needed. Maintains section and work areas in a neat, clean, and orderly condition. Develops an awareness of new techniques, procedures, equipment, and instrumentation. Assists in new product evaluation and participates in continuing education programs, professional journals, and training when appropriate. Assists in the orientation and training of new personnel.
