Position Summary
The Peer Support Specialist provides onsite, peer-based support and coaching to Brighton Marine campus veteran residents. This role includes fully subsidized housing on campus to best facilitate the candidate’s duties. The Peer Support Specialist is an essential part of the residential community and our therapeutic care model— fostering connection, empowerment, and dignity among residents while collaborating with staff to enhance program success. The ideal candidate is committed to providing trauma-informed, culturally responsive support by drawing on lived experience to build trust, offer mentorship, and help peers access resources that promote recovery, resilience, and stability, particularly in the areas of mental health and substance use disorders.
Key Responsibilities
Resident Peer Support & Community Engagement
- As a tenant of the veteran residential building, serve as a peer mentor and support presence that is highly attuned to the residents’ needs.
- Build supportive, trusting relationships based on the shared experiences of military service and challenges such as experiencing homelessness, mental health or substance use disorders.
- Facilitate peer groups, workshops, recreational and educational community activities to promote well-being and connection.
Navigation & Advocacy
Assist residents in navigating healthcare, behavioral health, VA benefits, housing resources, employment support, and more.Assist veterans in creating and implementing personalized recovery plans, helping them identify goals and develop strategies to achieve them.Accompany residents to appointments or meetings as needed, providing advocacy and reassurance.Encourage resident self-advocacy and model resilience, healthy coping skills, and community reintegration.Compliance & Collaboration
Maintain accurate, timely documentation of peer support activities in accordance with program standards, complying with HIPAA and all organizational policies.Support data collection and reporting efforts while contributing to program evaluation improvements from a peer perspective.Partner with case managers, property management, and program staff to ensure coordinated support and services for residents.Education & Empowerment
Educate veteran residents about their conditions, treatment options, and recovery strategies, as well as community resources and veteran services available.Support residents in developing personal goals and action steps toward independence.Provide informal coaching and skill-building opportunities in areas such as self-care, communication, and problem-solving.Requirements : Qualifications
Certifications & Experience
Must be a veteran of the U.S. military. Honorable Discharge preferred.Lived experience of homelessness, recovery from mental health or substance use conditions, with at least one year of successful recovery.Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) or experience providing peer support, mentorship, or working in a veteran-focused setting preferred.Associate’s degree preferred.Must have a clean driving record and valid Driver’s License to transport veterans to occasional appointments using a company vehicle as needed.Skills & Competencies
Knowledge of mental health and substance use disorder recovery principles.Strong interpersonal, active listening, and empathetic communication skills, with the ability to build trust while maintaining professional boundaries.Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365.Other Requirements
Must live in the veteran residential building, which is entirely subsidized for this role.Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends based on veterans’ needs or in the event of emergencies.Physical Nature of the Job
Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout the campus.
