Responsibilities
Initial assignments will be patrol, with opportunities after two to three years of patrol experience to apply for special assignments in areas such as SWAT, Traffic, Narcotics, Detectives, K-9, Marine Patrol, UAS, Child Abuse, School Resource Deputy, Hostage Negotiation, Bomb Technician, Computer Forensics. All members who have completed one year of continuous special assignment are eligible for special assignment pay of 5%.
Other compensation includes a per-pay-period benefit to obtain legal defense fund insurance. Clark County is actively seeking qualified minorities, women and veterans to reflect community diversity. Deputies are represented by the Clark County Deputy Sheriffs' Guild.
Skillbridge Program (For Transitioning Service Members)
The Skillbridge Job Training program offers transitioning active-duty service members an opportunity to gain experience, train, intern, and apply for employment openings as a certified law enforcement officer in Washington State. The program provides up to 16 weeks of training to prepare for a career as a deputy sheriff. Training occurs at various Clark County locations. Acceptance requires passing all deputy hiring requirements, including interviews, polygraph, and medical and psychological evaluations prior to start. Upon completion, the Sheriff's Office may hire the service member and they will attend the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement Academy.
Qualifications
Knowledge of
Geographic area of employment, major roads and traffic routes; basic aims and principles of crime prevention, law enforcement, and rehabilitation.
Ability to
Learn and understand laws of arrest, search and seizure, and rules of evidence; respond quickly and exercise sound judgment under dangerous or confusing conditions; physically restrain individuals using safe methods; handle firearms safely and accurately; maintain cooperative attitude toward co-workers and the public; use technology including computers; speak and write effectively with good grammar.
Any combination of work experience and education that demonstrates ability to perform the work of the class.

Selection Process
This is continuous recruitment. Clark County retrieves scores from Public Safety Testing on a continuous basis. Applicants must pass the Law Enforcement Written Exam and Physical Ability Test through Public Safety Testing before proceeding to the next step in recruitment. Current PST test scores administered before February 28, 2025 will expire on May 1, 2025.

Work Environment and Physical Demands
Work is performed in patrol vehicles and various indoor / outdoor settings. Exposure to weather, potential hazards, and high-stress situations is common. Essential tasks include operating vehicles, using radios and technology, responding to emergencies, conducting investigations, pursuits, arrests, and handling evidence. Physical demands include lifting up to 100 lbs and other strenuous activities.
