Part Time EQUINE MAINTENANCE
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent (copy required upon hire)
- Basic knowledge of horsemanship, horse care, and equine behavior
- Comfortable handling and riding horses and performing routine barn chores
- Willingness to learn equine care practices and follow established procedures
- Physical requirements include but are not limited to the ability to lift up to 75 pounds, the ability to stand for long periods in extreme weather, handle horses safely, and assist riders on and off horses
- Valid New York State Driver’s License (copy required upon hire)
- Yearly Physical (required within 1 month of hire)
- Ability to work with a diverse population presenting a variety of cultural, socioeconomic, developmental, and sexual identities. Must be willing to establish and foster healthy, supportive relationships that acknowledge individual identities and encourage personal growth.

OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION
The Equine Maintenance Worker provides foundational support to the Equine Program by assisting with daily barn chores, facility upkeep, and general horse care under the supervision and guidance of the Equine Manager and designated equine leadership. This entry-level position is designed for individuals seeking experience in barn operations and equine care while contributing to a safe, clean, and structured environment for youth and animals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB
Clean stalls, paddocks, and barn areas dailyAssist with feeding and watering horses as directedMaintain the cleanliness of tack rooms, wash stalls, and feed storage areasPerform routine barn maintenance and grounds work (mowing, fence repairs, snow removal)Assist with inventory restocking and supply organizationFollow all barn safety protocols and report any hazards or concernsMonitor animal health and behavior, administer medications, and coordinate with veterinarians and farriers, under the oversight of the Equine Manager and designated equine leadershipConduct basic repairs and report larger maintenance needs to appropriate personnelObserve and report changes in horse behavior or condition to supervisory staffAssist with grooming and basic handling under supervisionHelp with horse turnout and blanketing as neededSupport in preparing horses for programming or veterinary appointments under directionSupervise therapeutic riding sessions and ground-based equine programming for youth and staffTransport youth to horse shows, trail rides, and special eventsProvide hands-on vocational instruction in equine care, barn management, and riding skillsDevelop individual learning plans tailored to youth interests and abilities under the direction of designated equine leadershipModel and teach workplace expectations, including punctuality, professionalism, and safe work habitsSupervise youth participation, maintain attendance records, and provide feedback and progress documentationEnforce vocational area rules and ensure safety procedures are followedServe as a role model in professionalism and positive behavior for youth participantsDocument and report significant incidents or behaviors appropriately and promptlySupport participation in agency-wide and community special events as requestedAssist with farm operations and programming to support broader campus agricultural efforts.Perform other duties that the Equine Manager or designated equine leadership assigns.Responsible for adhering to and performing all duties by every safety standard, practice, and policy of The William George Agency.
